Applique Background -- Opinions, please

Don't use just a solid black - it kills anything on it.

I used solid black for my lizard quilt and for the background of my bright Mardi Gras mask quilt, and both just look a bit "flat". A whole mass of BonB prints would be more interesting. Or if you want to use just one fabric how about one of the very dark Moda Marbles. There are a couple of VERY dark greens, and a gorgeous dark navy that is nearly black, and I love the aubergine colour too (odd as I don't like purple normally).

If you decide to have the pieces background why not randomly piece lots of different VERY dark colours (say purple, navy, black, brown, green but all really dark so that from a distance the illusion of "black" is created but up close the variations are there).

Eight of the sewers here made Christmas tree wall hangings with black backgrounds this past season, and so my precious stock of BonB prints was sadly depleted (read totally exhausted!). The wall hanging was comprised entirely of HSTs and the mass of different blacks looked really great.

I just did a "big buy" of BonB prints from Equilter - good range there, but I went with them mainly 'cos it was easy lol. So our BonB box is full again!

I don't know if there is an "apple butter" in black, or maybe a "splash", but they are both beautiful, mottled fabrics. Let us know what you decide. LOVE the idea of brights!

Yes, I have been thinking of it, too, as it is something that would never have occurred to me. Reading your post, Polly, made me think of this - as a possible solution to bits looking faded: here it is Joan for your consideration. I know it is typically me and so might be completely unacceptable to you >gI'm not a card-carrying fanatic about pre-washing but if you do choose
