I'm in the middle of free motion quilting a top with lots of bumpy seams on my domestic sewing machine and struggling because my (darn) darning foot is catching on the bumps. What is your favourite foot for FMQ that glides over the bumps? Lizzy

I have a Janome 6500. My favorite free motion foot is clear, solid (except for the hole for the needle), round, the size of a quarter, and shaped lik e a contact lens. It came in a set called, Convertible Free Motion Quiltin g Foot Set. It's wonderful. Try to picture a clear round disk with slight ly raised edges, the size of a quarter. The raised edges glide effortlessl y over any seams or bumps, there's nothing to "catch" because it's smooth a nd round. I'm not sure if its available for all machines, but it's worth l ooking into.

Er... the darning foot! There's a Big Foot version too, but I prefer the smaller one. The Pfaff has its special "mezzanine" position where the tension discs are engaged but the foot doesn't come all the way down except at the moment of forming the stitch. So my advice is maybe to slow down. Or depending on your quilting plan, maybe you could use the normal foot, no free motion, and do a grid that takes you over the lumpy bits. then fill in with FM. Hi Roberta,

I did splash out on a Big Foot and it has made so much difference! A wonderful invention and I love it. I haven't quite finished the project in question as quilting is taking a bit of a back seat at the moment as DS2 had another round of orthopaedic surgery and is now staying with my MIL for his 6 weeks of non-weightbearing on crutches as she has better ground floor facilities and easier stairs, so I am shuttling between 2 house, luckily only one mile apart. On top of that DH has accepted a job offer in the US and now is the time to declutter (except the stash) in preparation for whenever the big move takes place.

So busy, busy, but not much quilting.
