Hooked on Feathers

My Sally Terry "Hooked on Feathers" book arrived today and I'm practicing making good feathers. I have to say I really like this method. I would do sort of a bull-in-a-china-shop sort of feathers but have never liked how they looked, which has usually been with lots of obvious sew overs and doubled seams. I've never been brave enough to include on in a quilt. But I can already tell that this is a good technique. It's easy and the practice actually allows me to see improvement already. I think this might really work for me. Thanks to whoever it was who first posted about this book. I'm really happy with it and can see some real potential to make my haphazard quilting skills better.

I don't know who recommended it either, Sunny, but, as ever, it was just one of the many happy things rctq has given us. Something you may not have noticed yet is that once laundered, mostly your oops will disappear. I'm enjoying Hooked on Feathers too. Polly

Aah Sunny. You must be the person who got "mine" from Amazon. Lol. They had to cancel they said as they had double booked!

Sorry Estelle, but I didn't get mine from Amazon. I bought from one of their lower priced (but not much) vendors. I bought a used copy that actually has a nice little note written in the front. The book doesn't show much wear, but the spine is already broken in, which doesn't matter. I'm having it put on a spiral binding for easier use at the machine.

I like the spiral binding idea! I'm guessing you can do that with any paperback book? Allison

No Estelle, if it was Amazon UK I will confess - it was me!!

Just about, as long as the page margin next to the binding is wide enough so that the spiral binding doesn't damage it. I've had the spiral binding done on a few of my quilting books and also on the bread machine recipe books that I use a lot. Another option is to have the spine of the book taken off and have the pages drilled to fit a loose-leaf binder.

One thing I've learned to do when getting a book spiral bound is to request that they give back the spine that they've cut off. Then you can put it inside the spiral binding so you can see what book it is when it's on the shelf.

I've heard of this spiral binding for books and have several with loose pages that could use this 'treatment'. Where does one go for this service? Some place like Kinko's or what? I'm in a very small town so I'll have to drive some distance and would like to call ahead to be sure they can do it. Thanks!

Kinko's, Staples, Office Depot ...... pretty much anyplace where they do printing and such. And it's pretty cheap.

Thanks, Sunny. I'll check into it when I make my next trip to The Big City! Can they do it while you wait? Or go back say after a doctor appointment giving them a couple of hours?

Just had another look at Amazon and they say they still have one in stock. The only other copies I could see were twice the price but were not from Aprohead.

It all depends on how busy they are, Leslie. Sometimes they do it while you wait, sometimes they need some time. Just ask; most of these places (I usually use Kinko's) are open from very early to fairly late. The earlier you get there, the better your chances of a "right away" deal.

I ordered one from Connecting Threads yesterday. They have 40% off all books in stock through Sept. 21. My experience with Connecting Threads has been positive.

Thanks, Sandy. I didn't know if this process was a 'big deal' or if they just whipped it out for you on the spot. I'll try to plan ahead when I go again.

Julia, THANK YOU! I just ordered my copy for $14.97 plus shipping! (Darn! Can't remember how much the shipping charge was but it was reasonable.) Woohoo! I have been wanting this book for some time.
