I *never* use solid fabrics- til now!

Made for a (male) friend's 60th birthday gift. All Kona cotton solid colored fabrics, machine appliquéd, and machine quilted in sections..... and every possible mistake (and then some!) were made in the process.

Now I have to un-sew the label and remove the straight pins I put over the boo-boo so I'd notice it and remember where to put the label. Then I sewed the label *right over the pins*!!! (sigh) What can I say? It was late and I was tired and the lighting was poor and..... ;-)

This one has been a REAL challenge!!!

Those solids aren't very forgiving, are they? Regardless, this looks wonderful and ready for someone to curl up under for a nap! Good job!

OMG, Leslie. That is beautiful. A perfect man-quilt. You made such good use of those beautiful Kona solids. I am so tempted to try something everytime I look at all the gorgeous colors in the Hancocks/Paducah catalog. I really, really, love what you've done.

Well - you met the challenges head on, and the end result is terrific. Congratulations. And - working with solids can be a refreshing change. They look wonderful. . In message , Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. writes

Leslie you did a great job! I love the Kona solids, but have yet to make a solids-only anything. It may have been a challenge, but you more than conquered it.

I always use tone-on-tones or batiks or something with some movement but never solids. They appear to be 'flat' and attention grabbing when I see them in a quilt but I know that's just my perception. This was a big challenge for me who loves strong contrast and lively colors and bold prints and vibrant quilt blocks and quilting patterns. Maybe that's why I made so many silly, elementary mistakes???

But I'm glad I did it. Once. ;-)

The quilt and design is beautiful Leslie. Well done. Is it your own design? I am sure the recipient will be thrilled. Cheers Bronnie

Thanks, Bronnie. Yes, it's my 'invention'. I had this silly idea that a big moon over the mountain block in the center- as a medallion- would make the piecing less work with fewer blocks. By the time I designed the trees and stars, etc. it was more work than all the MOM blocks together! Then I had to quilt the front medallion and the backing medallion separately with extra thin batting and join them with 'invisible' tacking- I didn't want either quilting pattern going thru to the other side. Sheesh! How difficult and challenging could I make it???

I love the quilt. I've tried that block many times and always throw it aside. Can never get the curves and then all the parts to fit together. My eyes were going everywhere looking at all the colors.

Speaking as a male quilter, I don't know if it is a "male" thing or not, but I love working with solids. I know Polly cringes when I say this, but to me it is far more demanding of attention to detail to pull it off. If it is a "male" thing, then so be it. You did a nice job on the quilt, and I am sure he will be happy to receive it. John, or as the Beatnicks used to say,"Solid Man".
