Oh boy. I've finally turned the corner on this final border. How could something so simple be so hard?
As I sewed on my "points out" border, I realized the previous round had a problem. The square- in-a-square corners were larger than the rest of her border, make the whole thing ruffle terribly at the corners. Also, my longest border edge (all were cut from the same size triangles) was 3 or 4 inches longer than my smallest.
Yikes. I am so not a piecing person.
Now, the quilt itself isn't square so far -- 43.5 by 45.5 (plus the .
25 inch for seaming). After I ripped out the seams of the previous border's corners and tweaked them till it laid flat, I started tweaking my new strips. By ripping out and resewing with bigger seam allowances here and there, I got each side to fit right. So now, I have a points out border with 10 points on each side that lays flat and *looks* square, even though it has this wonky "almost" square proportions.
The sort of sad thing is, unless someone measures the quilt, no one will ever realize that "equalness" on my border is an illusion I spent so much time on.
Good thing I had a snow day with no schedules to calm me down enough to patiently fiddle with this thing.
