New here...Intro

Hi everyone,

I'm new to newsgroups and here. My friend "flair" in Michigan told me about this group and I just had to join. Although I don't get the opportunity to post much I'm sure I will be doing some.

I live in NW Florida panhandle. I'm so far up and over that I'm in the Central time zone. I started hand stitching blocks many moons ago with Flair and others on the BBS's. No internet back then. Any way I never got any further then making blocks. Now I've started a prayer quilt ministry in our ladies group at church. Sometimes I think I made a mistake but then it is so rewarding I put all the dismay aside. See we have several ladies involved....2 wash and press material....5 almost know how to cut only (if I can just get them to measure correctly and cut without mountains and valleys we may have less wasted fabric) then there are 2 that know how to thread a needle on a sewing machine plus have learnt how to stretch, sandwich plus pin a quilt and only 3 of us that actually know a tad bit about quilting. Since 1/21/07 we have had

18 prayer quilts on the altar. Pretty good I think considering how many actually sew.

I'm looking at all my books and patterns trying to decide some simple blocks and or ???? to be able to get more of these ladies sewing. I was so upset one day with the cutters that I gave everyone homework. A simple 9 patch using the strip method. Well my worst cutter ended up with totally different fabrics from when she started and over 20 wrong block measurements due to her hurry up and cut, cut, cut method. The unfortunate part is she never did learn a thing about measure twice cut once. So I'm still trying to deal with those problems. Oh and that is all she is willing to do.

I'm not sure of the rules concerning newsgroups so if I do something wrong please let me know. I promise to learn not to repeat errors. Well I need to get a move on as I have my group showing up soon and must get to the church with a smile. Hmmm not always easy.

I would love to visit any of your sites and any sites that I might be able to get simple patterns for my ladies and even more simple instructions. Thanks for any help.

Welcome, Dorothy!! Good luck with your church group!! I'm not sure I would have the patience to do it LOL. Where in the panhandle are you? I have family in Pensacola and Crestview.

Welcome aboard to the best cyber quilting frame ever! Your group's prayer quilts will be more appreciated than you will ever realize! Have faith (and Patience) in teaching your gals how to cut, piece blocks and, eventually, quilt.

Just my 2 cents worth, but have you tried that 1/4" marking tape on the underside of your quilt rulers? It might help the gals line up accurate measurements. If all else fails, maybe make cardboard/plastic templates the exact size of the piece to cut, and then trace the block pieces with pencil or chalk, and then have the gals cut on the lines with a scissors.

Good luck with your wonderful projects. Do check the cachecows website for patterns - they're great. ME-Judy

Welcome Dorothy! Glad you could join us -we are happy to provide tea and sympathy, especially when it's a quilting issue. Maybe your ladies need to start with a 4-patch! There may not be a solution to this problem, some people just aren't "cut out" for accurate measuring. But it's wonderful that you have finished so many quilts! Roberta in D

Welcome Dorothy You are doing good work with the ladies. There is a lady in the group, called Kim, who designs and makes blocks and quilts with biblical themes. I don't think they are particularly easy - but you might like them for yourself? Only thing is, of course, I don't have a note of the site address. Can someone help here? If not, try Googling with 'Bible blocks' as the key words. Her address is Nanaimo in British Columbia, Canada. So, if you see a site with the name Kim and Nanaimo, you have got the right one!

Good luck with the work. . In message , Dorothy writes

Welcome to the best group ever! I think it is wonderful you have the patience to teach the ladies. I have a friend who is just like the lady you described. She "eyeballs" things, and then can't figure out why it doesn't always measure up. She has just about given up "real quilting" as she calls it. She does beautiful needlepoint - she says that doesn't have to be so exact.

Hi Dorothy and welcome to RCTQ!

18 prayer quilts since January sounds an amazing achievement - do you have any pictures to post links to? (Just don't post the actual picture on here as some people are still on dial-up and pics take forever to come in on Usenet...)

A little while ago, one of our many enterprising members made a website with links to all our personal websites, so you can settle yourself down with a nice cup of your favourite beverage and have a fine time browsing quilts made by "real" people and not by "super-quilters" who I am sure don't exist (apart from Carol Doak that is 'cos she posts on here every now and then!)

The only other rule to remember on here is "there are no stupid questions" - something that you may have been struggling with for ages could well be someone else's stumbling block - and by asking "how do I do...?" will open the floodgates with every answer under the sun! And then everyone will be happy because someone else has asked what they were too scared to post!

(Oh - and no blatent advertising of goods or services for sale - but thats par for the course on Usenet groups such as this!)

Thanks for this, Sally. I have now saved the RCTQ site address, so I won't need to be so clueless in future. I mean, I might be clueless on occasions in future (would be hard not to be!!); but I won't need to be >g . In message , Sally Swindells writes

Welcome, Dorothy. It took me more than 2 years to convince a neighbor that cutting carefully is important. She just races through life and methinks she's going to miss all of it. Polly

Welcome Dorothy from L.A. (Lower Alabama! An old friend was from out that way in the Panhandle and he referred to his home as such) I'm in the same state but close to the middle, near Gainesville. This is a great place to hang out and talk, about quilting or whatever else comes along. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.

Sorry folks...I've been away from the computer [working for a living is NOT conducive to browsing newsgroups, especially since I've gone back to work after a 7-year retirement!]. Thanks for the plug, Patti, but I would add that most of my patterns ARE designed and written for beginning to intermediate quilters [the exception would be the centre block of "Shepherd's Light".] The Word in Patchwork blocks are perhaps a little simpler than the current series, but there are lots in the Genesis-to-Job and Sampler of Psalms series that would be very do-able for beginning groups. Most church groups also use the introduction and scripture as a devotion or jumping-off point for Bible study as part of their time together.

Since I've gone back to work, I've had to leave one of my Bible block classes to their own devices: they seem to be doing fine working together to follow the instructions, so I'm sure Dorothy's group would do well, too: perhaps beginning with Garden of Eden. Might I suggest you allow for the wonky cutters by having them cut everything a little big, then squaring up patches before setting them together? And do remember that each person's "good enough" is going to be a little different: I remind my classes constantly that they need to allow themselves [and each other] to be less than perfect! It's a very good working illustration of Grace!
