Not Crazy Quilt

Not long ago I posted one of my dream quilts as a crazy quilt - I guess I had the wrong idea. The quilt I have started is a combo crazy / handkerchief quilt. It'll definitely be crazy! But it's velvet / antique handkerchief / velvet. It will be embellished and probably a throw size. I am not a hand sewer and it will be all hand sewn! I may have to go over it with a machine or by the time I get to sashing and binding I can get the machine next to me. I'm flying by the seat of my pants on this one! Wish me luck! Judy from Mass

Hi Judy,

Ideas, like opinions, can't be wrong. It doesn't sound terribly different than a combination velvet/silk necktie quilt I read about not too long ago (might have been here - don't recall exactly). I'm finding myself in the midst of similarly... umm... *different* kinds of projects. I call them "pseudo-crazy" (having elements of crazy quilts, particularly with regard to textures).

How are you utilizing/arranging the hankies? Flat out as if they were blocks? Cutting them up? Do you have any clear pattern/design to the arrangement or is it haphazard/"crazy"? Sounds like an interesting project however you approach it.

If you'd like to exchange notes/ideas, you know where to find me... ;-)

Right now I have 3 large blocks - a dark green velvet and a black velvet with the handkercheif in the middle. I'm embellishing the velvet now, with silver metallic thread. Having fun!

Pseudo crazy? I like that! Or Ultra-crazy!! Right now it's velvet/ a whole handkercheif / velvet. I'm embellishing the black velvet with a silver thread. I have ribbons, buttons and other stuff to play with too! You just gave me a good idea. I have a bunch of Daddy's ties - maybe when the time comes I can do a piano border with those. I'll post pictures when I finish a row. Any ideas you want to throw my way....I'll listen to!

You might try some Google *Image* searches on "crazy quilt" and whatever other keywords (necktie, handkerdhief, etc.) apply to your general ideas and collect (copy) any images with features/ideas you like into a folder for future reference. Make a list of the features/ ideas, and begin incorporating them into your quilt. Depending on the kind of machine you have, a lot of CQs utilize various decorative stitches (or they can be done by hand) and embroidery.

If you're using handkerchiefs as quilt blocks, measure them all to find the smallest dimension, and use that as your basic block size. Any handkerchiefs that are larger can be sewn in leaving the excess borders to frill (as if you were embellishing with lace).

If you're using your dad's neckties, maybe make one section out of one of his shirts, with a necktie tied closing the collar (and sewn down to stabilize it) and a (men's) handkerchief sticking out of the pocket? ;-)

I have just now decided to use the skinny part of the ties as a "piano keys" border. I have the book Daddy's ties and I like some of the patterns in there. I may never get to the rest of the tie but at least I won't be wasting the tie.
