OT: thanks for Furminator advice

A big thank you to whomever posted about the Furminator for grooming dogs and cats. I ordered one on Ebay, and does it ever do what it says it will. I used it on my 3 long haired cats and I've never seen so much hair!! They didn't fuss like they have with their regular combs. Have the vacuum handy if you use it. Thanks again

Smile! I did the same thing - ordered one after it had been discussed here. They are now available here, so I was able to get it without international shipping costs! So far I have only done one cat - he was a little reluctant at first, but soon didn't seem to mind. DH suggested I carried out the 'operation' in the inner porch, as there is no furniture, and is a reasonably confined space for later vacuuming! That worked a treat. I plan to do the largest cat today - he has the thickest coat. I might have difficulty emerging from the forest of fur that I have no doubt will come off him. Thanks from me , too. . Never heard of one before, just googled it - looks really good! Think I'm going to have to buy one.

We've 3 cats, 1 old lady who is malting badly and 2 boys who do manage to pull out each others fur!!!

I missed the original thread about this, but I have another recommendation. If you like the Furminator, you'd *love* the Mars Coat King -- it gets out even more hair.

Is it best for long haired furries? or would it be worth the expense for a lab? It amazes me how much hair I find around the house from this short haired guy!

If you look it up, Kate, it will tell you the breeds it is not recommended for. I only remember the cats I'm afraid (and probably not all of them!). Sorry. Basically, it is good for any furry person with an undercoat. . In message , Kate G. writes

Hands off, PAT. It only works if they have two layers of fur >gg< . In message , Pat in Virginia writes

Kate: You are so right ... it is amazing how much short Lab hair I find when DS and his dog visit. If you find out this would work for Labs, kindly let me know. Thanks!! PAT

I have (had, actually we just had to put the old guy down a few weeks ago) a lab cross, and we also have a golden retriever as well. The best of both worlds! Long and short! We have a furminator and while it worked on the lab I would say that you really wouldn't get your moneys worth out of it, it is not worth the extra expense for a lab, one of those looped serrated steel rakes works wonders on a lab coat and you are not going to see much better with a furminator.

Now the Golden on the other hand, WOW, I could brush him and use the fur I get off him for batting in my quilts! It just falls off him with the furminator! Mind you though this 'brush' was not intended for 'everyday' use. It is a once a week sort of thing while using a slicker brush for brushings in between. You can rob your poor doggie (or kitty) of his nice warm undercoat in no time!

Look at the golden retriever - that's almost what it looked like the first time I used it. Joey hates being brushed and after the first few times, he is now willing to sit for this. It doesn't hurt him at all.

They have a list of dogs not recommended for. Labs was not on that list.

I have two labs that I use it on all the time.....they are constantly shedding!!!! They don't get into the water as much as they should so they don't keep the coat......

The website has a list of breeds on it. I've used it even on my dog-girl's legs, which have short fur, and it pulls out lots of undercoat even there. Having never had a lab, though, I don't know if they have an undercoat like my shepherd/collie mix has.

Might have been me who mentioned it, I forget! I got one a few months ago, also off ebay. Way cheaper than at the pet store.

My dog looks far less like a refuge than she did before. She still doesn't like me grooming her around her hind legs and tail end but the rest of her looks a lot better! I think we could have knit a dog from the old hair that thing pulled out of her coat.
