Product Review

When a product changes my (quilting) life, I have to talk about it.

I've been using Mary Ellen's Best Press, the Clear Starching Alternative and it is wonderful.

I'm making log cabin blocks and I am pressing the seams open. I spray the top of every seam after I press it open and even though I've sprayed the blocks about 10 times total, there is no noticeable buildup, no dragging and no scorching.

My blocks are crisp and just beautiful.

I love this stuff. I'm buying a gallon of it to refill my small bottle. I am using the lavender and it smells nice.

Does it come without perfume? I prefer not to add anything that smells!

Donna asked about an unscented option. Yes, Best Press does come in a clear unscented version. I'm using that now. I originally bought the "blue" one (sea breeze or something). It was very nice but I prefer not to add scent to my quilts as I go :-)

Thanks for the info - I'll be looking for the non-scented Best Press.

Yes, I've seen it unscented. I, OTOH, need all the help I can get. Maybe if it smells good people won't notice what it looks like.

Thanks for the info. I've been very curious about this product. Loved hearing there is no building, dragging, or scorching -- this was the reason I was hesitant to buy it. I also am working on a log cabin, my first one! Are you supposed to press the seams open? I've been pressing them toward the outside edge of the block. I'm about 1/2 finished, so I guess it's too late to change directions now, but I'm curious. In fact, I got a little carried away and hacked up practically my entire stash into 1.5" strips. It's a scrappy log cabin. When I get finished, I'll offer the leftovers up to anyone who can use them. I think I cut wayyyy too many. Sherry

Sherry, I always press my seams open. I can't stand the ridge if I don't. I iron everything in sight into distortion trying to get rid of it. I finally just gave in and press my seams open.

I am moving towards that, too. So far it has been places where I have wanted the symmetry; but I think I will be getting near to doing it all the time, unless I want a special effect, very soon. I think the result

*looks* beautiful.
