Semi OT: Need a quick holiday ornament?

While on my treat/retreat, I had the chance to do a good turn. The shop's owner Dawn was out of town, aiding her elderly grandmother who had taken a fall. This grandmother is the one who started Dawn on her sewing career, and is a special person to many.

I took along the following: 3 cookies cutters [bell, tree, gingerbread man], roll of white, roll of red 1/8" ribbon, pinking shears, small jingle bells, scrap batting. I asked the group to take a few minutes to do a holiday ornament for Dawn, for the tree she put up in the shop [it was pretty bare], if they had the time and were so inclined. I supplied everything except their fabric.

Trace the cookie cutter onto a piece of fabric or flannel. Layer batting and backing. Simply stitch around the marked out cookie cutter pattern [straight or decorative stitch!], then trim with pinking shears. Hand sew or attach a ribbon to hang [you can try to insert it between batting and backing while sewing together]. Add a jingle bell if you want.

Voila! an ornament in less than 5 minutes. Sign the back if you want.

I'm happy to say when I left there were about 15 ornaments donated to Dawn's tree, and some happy attendees who now have an idea to use at home!

You could use any type of cookie cutter, or fussy cut fabric [I did that for a Celtic ornament hung on point]. And, you can do this for any holiday or occasion ;)

Last year I made some totally tacky and cheap gifts. You need a pack of dangle earring bases (I forget what they're called but you can get lots in one pack in the crafts section), some 'gold' jingle bells and tiny red ribbon. Slip the bells on the earring bases, add wee ribbon bows. Period. That's it. I decorated the post mistress, the grocery checkout lady, the insurance clerk at the doctor's office and lots of others. They all enjoyed being dingy. Cost about 29¢ per pair of jingles. Polly

What a great idea! Simple and sweet. Thanks for sharing, Ginger.

And I bet the tree looked grand!

oh, Polly, thanks! I bought some French ear wires at Michael's yesterday. I went in to get new fabric scisors using the 40% off coupon, and got the ear wires. I have jingle bells from the ornament project. I will make some for me then some for others.

Wellllllll.....Susan. I declare. That's something you need to play with just for the fun of it. You'd find it very satisfying and really enjoy the journey. Maybe some 'time for Susan' needs to be on the agenda? Polly

Don't give them to anybody bigger than you. The post mistress is a hefty lady and the hug she gave me lasted for 3 weeks. Polly

As you can see from this late response I do not have a lot of "Susan" time right now. The few moments I can get away I am trying to accomplish a little Christmas shopping. Did finally get my hair cut last week. The beautician thought I had found someone else for my monthly cut. Also made it to one Christmas concert last week end. It was lovely. I do miss singing in the church choir but must admit that my voice doesn't have the range or breath support it did when I was

  1. I really had to watch myself that I didn't start singing during Vivaldi's "Gloria".

Kohl's department store has great sale today and tomorrow. In addition to the sale price I get an extra 30% off the entire purchase if I put it on my Kohl's charge card. (Don't get me started on stores encouraging use of their charge cards) They are open until 11:00 tonight so I was planning on putting Mom to bed early and going on a spending spree. Problem is the weather. We have 4" of snow on top of ice and it is still snowing. I don't think tonight is a good time to go out. (the drive from downtown Chicago to O'Hare airport which is usually 35 minutes is currently 3 hours!) Guess I will stay home and try to get away tomorrow afternoon. Dave is working form home tomorrow. Yes, I know I could do my shopping on-line and from catalogs but I am looking for the little stuff.)
