To wash or not to wash?

Hi Sunny,

I wash my gift quilts when they are finished. 1.) I have a cat who insists on lying on every piece; 2.) I tend to lay my quilts on the carpet while we figuring the final layout; 3.) it takes me so long to finish a quilt, I'm sure it's collected dust if nothing else; 4.) sometimes I use spray basting which needs to be washed out; and 5.) I don't want the recipient(s) to get used to the unwashed look and then think there is something wrong with the quilt when they wash it.

If the quilt is for a baby, please wash it first.

Personally, I wash a quilt before giving it or using it. I know where it has been, and frequently that includes the floor, the car, and who knows where else. I have probably dripped sweat on it, and the cats may have managed to lay on it. Also, I frequently do not prewash fabrics, and I want whatever to happen to happen before I "gift" it. Also, since a lot of my quilts lately have been hanging in the shop as class samples, they are probably dusty. (Arizona is a *desert*, we have dust and it gets everywhere. That is a fact of life.) I also spray baste, and may have used some water soluble glue on the quilt somewhere. I want all that out before someone uses the quilt.

It is up to you to decide what to do. But I like people to know that the quilt is washable, and how. And that I have washed it already. It's your quilt, so you decide.

p.s. I wash everything. If it can't stand up to the washing it doesn't need to stay at my house. This includes the upholstery & drapery fabric that comes free from the drapery shop's "Come & get it!" Dig. Then I use those blue marking pens I'm always recommending, they have to be washed out of the Finished quilts. And I want to see what the Finished Quilt looks like all clean and sparkly and ever'thang

I usually wash it for a number of reasons.

1) to get rid of the QI hair that my very helpful inspectors have left behind. (I love them, but a new baby might night)

2) to get rid of any stray marking lines, etc.

3) so the recipient want panic the first time she washes it and it crinkles up.
