adhesive question - permanent vs temporary?

I currently use Hermafix/Dotto... but not the permanent one. A few years ago when it was recommended to me at my LSS, I started with the temp. and have always bought that. But I have been reading online about adhesives and I am wondering if this is a bad thing? Are my scrapbooks all going to fall apart???

Also, the Dotto is SOOOO expensive... I am thinking about switching... I have read a lot about the Duck brand that they sell at Walmart. Any thoughts on this product? And again, permanent or not??? Thanks! Allyson

Allison, I was looking at your website and realized that you live in Sarasota. Have you met Tabitha? She was living in Sarasota until a couple of months ago when she moved to Venice. You guys are close enough to scrap together!

I use both permanent adhesives and temporary.

I use permanent, but the way I put down and take back up, I should switch to temporary. :-)

I'm just like you, Carolyn. I use permanent and use it's like its temporary. But I've found that when I use temporary, I don't like the way it seems to allow me to move my page elements around by just touching them.

It's just not the same of you don't have to be very careful not to ruin the whole page just because the one little tag isn't straight, or the charm you thought would work, doesn't. I've actually had to invent something to cover up torn paper where I took something up. I guess that's part of the charm of scrapping, huh?

I love trying to figure out how to camouflage/hide mistakes. While I was looking through the album I made for my MIL I noticed that there was a picture of her with 4 other people that she disliked so much she had a post it hiding her face! So I stuck her part of the picture under the torn edge of the paper and added an embelishment over her face. You can't even see that she was in the picture at all! I should have taken a picture of the fixed page to show the before and after! Maybe she can take one now that they have a digital camera!

I learned during the 80's when painting t-shirts was quite the rage that a mistake is just a chance to flex your creative muscle instead of being disappointed and maybe throwing the item out. I've used that thought in all my crafts.

I remember the first torn page trying to fix a scrapbook page. A friend of mine had tape her page down to the wrong side in her album. We were still quite the newbies and got advice to use dental floss to get the page loosen. She did and it ripped the upper layer of the album page. She sat pouting looking at the page. I was shocked at the time too. Image that! A ripped page wouldn't even make a ripple on the meter now... that's how new we were. Then I reminded her that most of the time we cover the page with 12X12 decorated paper anyways. She said still pouting that it was going to be her "beach" page and she wasn't going to use a whole sheet of paper. We brain stormed a little and next thing I knew a light bulb went off in her head. She began tearing thin strips of ocean color vellum and laying them across the page. Voila! Tears covered! And it's one of the more striking pages in her album. It has an underwater look to it.

Hi Allyson! I had a look at your website and just love your LO's. I love the bright colours and the "fun" feel of it!

I use both. The only thing I use my dottos for is applying my pics though. I want to be able to pull them up w/out damage if the need ever comes. Mostly I use photo tabs. I cut them in half so that they'll go farther. I know, I'm frugal. I also lay everything out before I actually adhere it so I can see what the lo will look like. I use the liquid adhesives (glue pens etc) for paper piecing and other small stuff. I think you need a variety and then you can decide which works best for you.

That is very good thinking, MC. I think tags, etc. were made especially for covering holes in paper (or they should have been anyway.)

Thanks Judy... those are pretty old LOs I have on my web page. I am hoping to post some new ones soon. I have improved, I think, since then. :)

I'm not a Hermafix fan, but I also had a bad experience with the dispenser. LOL But, I'm a permanent gal. I figure if I ever need to take something up, then it's just a chance to show just how creative I can be! I've used the Duck brand from WalMart. For me, it will work in a pinch, because it doesn't seem as sticky to me as some others. I use a 2 way glue pen for small pieces. The 2 way glue pens are nice because you can use them for permanent or temporary. Just keep looking out there and find what works best for you.
