Old Newspaper Clippings

What's the best way to preserve old newspaper clippings? They're 40-50 years old and I'm afraid if I don't do something to them, they'll just crumble. Should I laminate them? Thanks, Carolyn

I'm having the same problem, except mine are from the 80's. i have been spraying them with archival mist, but ran out! i have articles spanning 3 years of my husband's high school wrestling career i'm trying to scrap for him for christmas! I have heard somewhere though that you shouldn't laminate them, not sure why. Carolyn

I'm not sure how to preserve newspaper clippings. Your best bet might be to make copies of them. I've heard that you shouldn't laminate newspaper clippings, though. I can't remember why though! Have you thought about asking a local museum about preserving the clippings? They might have an answer.

Here is what I've found. You have to have a little daring to use them though!

Preserving Newspaper Clippings - Using DISTILLED water, soak your newspaper clippings in a shallow dish (such as a baking sheet or pie tin)for 20 minutes. Then, remove the clipping and lie flat on paper towels to dry (several hours or overnight depending on humidity) - According to the Salt Lake Tribune Olympic Scrapbook Contest, this will preserve your clippings and make them acid free. Enjoy A rather comprehensive article which includes a number of techniques appears here:

Here is a great way to find what you are looking for on the web.

  1. Go to Google.com
  2. Click on Advanced Search Preferences
  3. in the "with the exact phrase" box type in what you are looking for i.e. preserving newspaper clippings" OR try your own name for fun.
  4. click on Google Search.

HTH!
