old picture handling

I want to thank everyone for your suggestions of help on my pages. Now, my mother has given me a huge box of pics, back to the early

50's. I haven't done any old pics and need advice. Do I copy the pics and use copies? And if so, how if the best way to copy them?? I imagine it can get very expensive, I'm not too far from a good size city with lots of resources, but I don't want to break the bank. If it's OK to use originals, is there anything I need to do to protect them? Thanks for all your advice!

I scanned all the old pictures my mother gave me and uploaded them to winkflash.com. It took a while to scan them all but once they were done I had copies made at 0.12 each (cheaper than I could have printed them for) and they arrived 3 days later in the mail. The bonus I was able to repair some that had been bent and restore the color that had faded in some of them before I uploaded them.

I agree with Scout Lady that making copies would be a great idea. You would be able to fix any pictures that needed fixing. But also, you would still have the originals as a backup. I know for geneology purposes, sometimes the back of the photo can help identify the date, place, or people in the photo. My Mom has tons of old (black and white, sepia, etc) family photos. One of the things I want to do is make a heritage album or two using those photos. I'll be out there this summer, and I just might see if I can find the time to scan them in and burn them to CD. Thanks for the inspiration, because one of these days, hopefully a long time from now, Mom isn't going to be around to tell me who's in the photos, etc. Good luck Wanda! You'll have to share your creations with us!

I have used originals with photo corners and no cropping of the photos. If I want to use it any other way I copy them either by scanning them in then getting them printed or print them myself.

Teresa, That's the same way I do mine. I would rather have the originals in the books in an acid free environment. Sandy
