Question about tumbling with walnut shells.

I am having a kit with PMC for Christmas and I have read on here about using walnut shells for tumbling.

What I want to know is can one break up walnut shells them selves to use for that purpose. At the moment in UK we are getting walnuts from California. Quite expensive at 4.50 dollars per kilo. seems a shame to throw the shells away if I can use them. Can anyone tell me how fine I should break them down to. TIA

Thanks Roxan for that info.

I shall have to look on the UK sites to see of I can find some. I tried to find some stainless steel shot but it only seems to available to industry and not a small user like I would be.

Here is the site for Rio Grande who ships to England. It may cost a little more but I know you can get what you need from them. Hope this helps. Do a search on line for UK sites that may sell what you need as well or contact a jewelry store that may sell you a small amount to use for home use.

Thanks for that but they no longer accept credit cards from other countries and also they have a $25 set up fee that is before one starts shopping. Too much hassle to shop with them from UK. Shirley

you will need at least 2 to 3 pounds for even a small tumbler. Maybe a metal-finisher would be willing to sell you a couple of pounds out of what they have on hand? Barbara Dream Master
