BLING!

Sewing BLING on military stile jacket.

Actually, this is a mock jacket in every sense! Mock fabric: 70% wool, 30% viscose Melton from Aberkhan (and very nice it is too, but it isn't Hainworths. Mind you, it's also about a third of the price of a Hainsworth's Melton!) Mock pattern: Butterick costume special rather than hand drafted real thing from extant coats (has one piece sleeves and princess seams on the front!) Mock tailoring: using fusible canvas rather than pad-stitching everything, pre-made sleeve heads and shoulder pads Mock braid: well, this bling is real enough, but it's lovely cheap and cheerful stuff from BL Joshi rather than real military braid from Wyvern weavers.

And I'm doing this on an entry level Brother Innovis 10A sewing machine I have been sent to test to its limits! It's coping fairy well so far, bling and all.

Having a blast! :D And yes, there will be the saga of the coat making and the separate saga of the machine testing when I get that completed. Looking forward to the buttonholes...

The silver braid for DGD's dance costume costs $5.00/yard. Makes me gulp every time I order some, although it's probably cheap compared to the military braid..

Are you testing it for someone else, or are you thinking of adding yet another machine to your collection?

You make the most interesting projects. All that sounds as if you are feeling better, if so I'm very happy for you.

I have contacts in the professional gents tailoring world that love to draft from historic patterns and tailors instruction manuals written in the 19th C. Comparing their drafts and the 19th C tailors drafts and scale patterns, you can see an incrediblt difference between early tailoring and modern tailoring. This Butterick pattern is nicely drafted, but more like a ladies jacket pattern drafted to a man's measurements with added tails. The pattern pieces are nothing like a

19th C Regency (think Peninsular War and Waterloo) coat, never mind a uniform jacket.

The width I need for this is about £15 per meter for the wide stuff, £7 for the narrow. The stuff I have cot me a fiver for the whole roll of each! There are 20m on the wide braid rolls. I get it at wholesale prices direct from the importer.

I am testing this one for a shop. There will be a whole series of them.

This is the bloke half of the Victorian set. Jacket and hat. Her outfits consist of a plain skirt and a flowered bodice, a plain bodice with a petal peplum/overskirt attached to avoid waistband build-up, and a hat.

I don't make hats. I'll post the saga so far on this lot, including how I don't make this hat, later today, after a bit more sewing.
