Feed Dog question

Hello everyone. My kenmore machine seems to be having a feeding problem. I'm sure many of you have experienced the bottom layer of fabric feeding through faster than the top layer, thus creating uneven seams. This really bothers me. I purchased a walking foot to use on my heavier fabrics, and it works great, but I shouldn't have to use this on regular cottons and such.

Any suggestions to keep my feed dogs from pulling the bottom layer of fabric faster than the top layer while using my regular foot?

Thanks, Angie in Georgia

I remember an older singer that I had, that was having problems with the feed dogs. took it to a store that fixes sewing machines. they said they couldn't fix it. well ended up purchasing a new singer, for around $300. after being home a few weeks, I was upset that the old singer wasn't working properly. I took off the bottom cover, noticed a screw that was loose, tightened it up, and it worked fine. well that started me on my sewing machine collection. I'm thinking that maybe something may be too tight of a setting somewhere in that area, so if you can get into that area under the feed dogs and just look around, you may notice something is just not right.

Thanks, I'll try that. Nothing like taking something apart to get you going!

The feed dog only feeds the bottom layer. If the bottom layer is feeding correctly, then the dog has no problem. The only thing that feeds the top layer is friction with the bottom. The presser foot works against that by putting drag on the lop layer. If the presser foot tension is wrong or the foot is rough, it will cause problems. I use a Teflon foot. It helps considerably.

Just make sure you don't have any "spare parts" left over!

Check the pressure settings on the foot. You may need a heavier pressure. Also, sometimes you can get slip between layers if the fabric's slippy (shouldn't happen with cotton, though), and you can sometimes stop that with a layer of folded tissue paper between the fabric layers, matt side out. Also, starch the fabric with spray starch before sewing, if you can - it gives a bit more grip. And finally, think about a Teflon foot.

Hi, I case you're wondering how to djust the pressure on the pressure foot, you turn the screw on the top left to the right to make it tighter and to the left to make it looser. I agree with the other writers that this is most likely your problem, especially since the machine works well with the walker foot. Good Luck! Teri
