Janome DC3050 opinions?

I'm looking to buy a sewing machine for my daughter and I to share. I'll be doing basic repairs, and curtains: nothing fancy. She's 14 and due to start a GCSE in textiles this autumn. I'd like to get a decent machine that she likes to use to encourage her. The school have Janome machines, so I figured they should be fairly robust!

I wasn't sure whether to go for a non-computerised machine (like maybe the 419S?) or one like this. Any views would be very welcome.

Thanks.

I would check with the school what type of project work she will need to do. For robustness a non-computerised machine might be better, but it will not have as many features. Also make sure you both test drive the machines, you may find there is a feature that is really useful or really annoying that will help you make up your mind. I would think that a good satin stitch and the ability to sew multiple layers would be useful for textiles coursework. Take along both some delicate and some tough fabrics to see how the machines handle them.

Hi:

I"m new, but wanted to add that Kenmore is made by the same company that makes Janome, as is the New Home brand. In fact, some of the parts - like feet and bobbins - are interchangeable between the machines. I have a Janome for quilting and other special projects but my Kenmore, bought for far less money, is a workhorse and I can do things on it I cannot do on the Janome comfortably, such as sewing on denim and corduroy and other heavy fabrics. I paid about $350 for my Kenmore and another $170 for the cabinet, which they delivered to my home address; I got my Janome QC4800 from a lady who bought it and then decided she didn't want to take the time to learn all about it - she paid $1400, and I got it for $700. While there are features on the Janome I really like, such as the needle up/needle down button and the locking stitch button, the Kenmore does a basic interlock stitch better than the Jaonme does, and, like I said, it handles heavier fabrics much more graciously.

Thanks, Trisha in MO

Right now they are. My older Kenmore was made by White in the days when White machines were good and not just a POJ.

Hi Annie!!!

I've been here a few weeks...I forget sometimes that I'm here, though....I've been busy myself with a quilt, sewing undies and bras, and trying to keep my chicken coop dry with 5 inches of rain in 3 days.
