I had my mini-panic in the 1960's when permanent-press fabric was introduced. I read about it, and how the finish had to be activated in an oven after the garment was assembled and pressed into shape, and said "There goes sewing at home!"

Permanent press in that sense never did develop. I made shirts out of perma-press fabric for a while, but lost my tolerance for polyester some time during the eighties or nineties.

So I'm quite calm and somewhat cynical when "improvements" come along. I still haven't seen any use for a serger valuable enough to make me buy one, though I'd probably continue to give house room to a serger if I had one.

After all, I'm giving houseroom to an IBM Executive typewriter and a Montgomery-Ward sewing machine with a jammed bobbin -- a serger doesn't take up much space.

Unlike a press -- I wonder whether DH would put up with setting one up in the garage? Perhaps I can persuade him that he needs a press in his workshop . . .

Sharon, If you're going in front of your school board, you certainly need a new suit. Just the fact that you are wearing something that you made and are proud of, not to mention feel good in, will give you more fire for your position. Imagine your meeting to be like a job interview, but only with something you have for them, instead of them for you. Get that fabric; you deserve it!

I don't think any of these things fit me, either, but I suppose if you grouped them together and threw in a few extra, I guess that would be me. I can take or leave sewing, sometimes. I will put together a tailored suit with something as challenging as an uneven plaid jacket with lining, and then do something as simple as curtains or little girl's dresses.

When DH and I used to go camping, he wanted me to make bags to carry our stuff in. This was anywhere from a lawn chair bag to a camp stove or lantern bag. I made curtains for a friend's truck shell (no rods, just velcro) and a futon, with cover, for our truck, when we had it for camping.

I've made lined raincoats, fishing vests, and "Kamakaze" hats for hunters or people who work outdoors in these cold winters. (They look like baseball caps with earwarmers on the sides, and are out of camoflauge fabric on top and flannel inside.) As I'm typing this, I'm in my bathrobe I made out of three pieces of fleece. It goes to the floor and I love it; very warm!

Christmastime I made fleece scarves for everyone, as well as made embroidered kitchen towels, aprons, and potholders. Recently I recovered the cushions on my kitchen chairs because I painted the kitchen while DH was on one of his trips.

I guess you could say I go in stages. Now I'm making my own briefs, and laughing at the high priced stores that charge an enormous amount for less than 8 inches of fabric; all because thongs and the like are popular. I'd rather have briefs anyway! And even those are high priced at the local department stores; the quality is very poor, too.

I just got my desk modified to a sewing table and it's great for large projects, such as quilting. I just finished a quilt, and have another in the process. Not in the mood to do anything fancy with quilts yet, but somewhere along the way, the urge will strike me and I'll seek the challenge. Something like paper piecing intrigues me, but not enough to start.

give yourself a pat on the back and some chocolate for being such a good girl. My fabric buying diet is nearly killing me, but no more until I have a place to put it. I wish DBF had more time to work on my basement room.

That is a bota bag. Generally used for wine, but I've known lots of people who carried water in them.
