Report on replaced J450A Steam Generator from Reliable

If y'all remember I ordered the J450A iron and it would not produce steam and I had to return it to the Reliable company in Canada.

They paid to have it shipped back to them and a replacement was sent in it's place. It was delivered last week and I must admit I am very very impressed!! It heats up quickly and really puts out a blast of steam that's very strong. Quite pleased my purchase. :-)

I do have one question, though. It came with a paper strip to test the hardness of my water and it's medium hard. Would y'all think it would be ok to mix regular tap water with distilled water?? Maybe half and half??

The iron came with two packets of descaling powder and wondered if the the half and half mixture would prolong the life of the boiler.

Whoo-Hoo! Good for you! Glad things worked out well.

Just go ahead and use tap water and keep to a good regular schedule of boiler maintenance with the descaling powder (white vinegar works as well, but check your owner's manual). This will keep your iron's boiler in tip top condition. Read some where that the quality of distilled water can vary from brand to brand, also by adding tap water you are introducing minerals into what was supposed to be mineral free water. Depending upon the quality of the tap water in question, this can be minimal or quite allot, either way you are some what negating the purpose of buying distilled water.

I know that Rowenta recommends using purchased spring water for people who have extremely hard water either full strength or half strength if the water isn't ridiculously hard. They specifically warn against using distilled water in any strength. To be on the safe side, it would be prudent to call Reliable and ask.

Thanks for the replies, kids!

I went back and read the instructions again concerning water to be used in the boiler. It said that if I had medium-hard water, which I do, to use tap water and then clean the boiler semi-annually.
