sewing machine belt replacement

i have a very old singer professional sewing machine--the leather belt needs replacement--currently it seems to be fastened together by a bent metal wire--looks like a very strong c shaped clip--anything new out there as far as belts are concerened?--i have never used the machine but want to make some minor repairs to it

Well.....I'm not sure. But I do know that the leather belts on treadles are fastened with a big staple. You just poke the staple through and bend it down when you get the belt cut to the right length. (has to be tight enough but not too tight.) I would imagine this is the same idea. My industrial has a rubber belt though, so I don't know. I bet Ron would know. Do you have a Singer shop near you? Would be worth a call to them to see what they can do for you.

Nope - that sounds like the right clip! :) The belt can be had by the mile from several places. Ask a local sewong machine repair shop.

Your local hardware store may have an common Vee belt of the length you need. Vee belts come in several widths. I have found that "A" widths work well on industrial machines.

If you don't find what you need the round leather you describes with a wire clip to fasten the ends still works good.

If you don't find what you need you might contact Missouri Sewing Machine Company in Kansas City, Missouri. The Truman Road location is their location that deals with industrial machines, just do a web search for them.

If, indeed, the belt needs to be replaced, these are easily obtained and fitted. And, yes, the traditional leather one is what is required. What else needs repairing?

A thousand times no! If it's a bog-standard treadle with an existing bog-standard leather treadle belt, you need to replace like with like. Apart from anything else, your rubber belt comes in one continuos loop, so you'll never fit it to the machine in question without cutting and re-joining.

Indeed I do know. The industrial will use either a 1/4" or 5/16" diameter leather belting. I can supply it is the OP wishes to drop me an email I will price it etc. A model number will help determine which it is. The model will be on the front on an Oval tag made of brass.

I would certainly say leather, that's what I put on my treadle machines, but I see that Lehman's is selling a rubber one these days. Those Amish are always the first on the block, aren't they? ;-)

I would pass on that and go the few extra for the leather.
