Stich & stich function

Evening all,

I have been browsing the web trying to figure out who made my machine ( remember , I enherited it and I can't find the actualy model anywhere, but that is ok)

Anyway, I have been looking at a lot of adverts and specs for various machines and this same thing keeps coming up which I just don't get :

What is the difference between "build-in stitch" and "stitch function" ?

I was looking at on 5 minutes ago which said this machine had 32 built-in stitches and 108 stich functions ?

I am a little confused ? my machine only has 12 stiches on it could it be possible that also have (quick calculation 108/32*12=) 40.5 stitch functions as well ? it is rather unlikely but still I would like to know what they are talking about

Jean , waiting for enlightenment

figured it was something like that, as an insdustrial designer that kind of thing realy makes me dislike marketing ppl. You make something serious and they go and " invent" new features for it.

sheesh

Simple answer: Say the stitch is a zig-zag stitch. One built-in stitch, right? Your machine might require the use of the zig-zag stitch for several things: 1) zig-zag stitch 2) narrow over edge (created from the narrow zig-zag) 3) forming the buttonhole stitch-- that's all a basic buttonhole is--zig-zag on right, zig-zag on left, with a couple of wider securing stitches forming the ends. I could go down the list, but that's it in a nutshell. Advertising 'stitch functions' is kind of a 'value added' hype--'This is what you can do with our machine'. Cea
