I have the same problem. I learned sewing from my mother and polished my skills for years using trial-and-error, so I know lots of techniques for which I don't know the "proper" name. I have started collecting sewing-related books, and I especially like Claire Shaeffer's books on couture techniques.
But in this case (buttonhole stitch), Google was my friend... ;-)
