shows how to make a homemade chuck.how would you center a piece on says that you will almost certainly get your finger smacked by one of thepegs, isnt that just as likely with a bought metal chuck that has jaws atthe outside of a piece?slightly off topic, I was reading that most people mount a bowl, do theoutside, and cut a spot into the back for the jaws to expand into, then flipit around and do the inside. I always just mount it once, and do all thework with it facing one way. is there an advantage to the other way?thanks

I use a combo. I'll put a bowl on the Jumbo Jaws and bring up the tailstock up for the heavy cleanup, and leave just a bit of a nub which I can usually cut off w/o any real problem. I usually slow the lathe way down for the last little bit but most times the rubber jaws hold just fine. Just have to be judicious w/the speed and agressiveness of cut...
