Ping Arch

Well, Arch I made one of your whatchamacallits. Here is my approach:

  1. On the jointer I made a 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 and cut to about 8 inches in length.

  1. marked and ripped it down the center.

  2. glued the smooth sides together only putting glue on the outer 2 inches of each end. This got me back to a 4 x 4 +

  1. Turned it round between centers then turned a spigot on the headstock end.

  2. marked a 4 inch section in the middle and turned double cones using the spigot chuck and tail center.

  1. Finished the outer end first, then held it in a reverse cone center while I finished the inner cone tip.

  2. The double cone came into two halves. Rotated one half on the other and glued & clamped them together.

  1. Grinned!

I still can't remember what you call it, but my wife called it CUTE.

Hey Gerald,

Many thanks for the instructions. Yours is a much better way to turn spherocons, aka Middle Georgia Watchamacallits. Especially good for preserving sharp apical points. I'm betting your clear instructions and your wife's supportive critque will cause a lot of them to be turned by our members.

You might want to try using different woods for the two halves. Keep on turning and grinning ...and posting. BTW. how did whatchamacallit roll?
