Vicmarc 5 1/2" chuck VL200

Hello,

I have had a Vicmarc VL200 chuck for about 2 years and it has been completely trouble-free, until now. For some unknown reason, upon closing down on the chuck it binds about 1/2 down requiring substantial power to close it down further. After about 4-6 turns it releases and works fine. Open it up and the problem occurs in reverse. I have tried heavy doses of WD40 without success. I have also removed the cover and inspected the inside. Everything looks fine, no debris, chipped gears or anything that I can see. The gears appear to have adequate grease. I do not want to dismantle the chuck to avoid the possibility of losing a part, I am good at that. Does anyone out there ever have a problem such as mine and if so how did you correct it? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.....Ralph

Ralph,

I'm guessing here, but are you in the habit of extending the jaws just a bit further than the #4 pin under the jaw guide wants you to? I had that problem on my VL100 chuck from doing just that, until I finally wore the pin down enough to where it didn't foul on the jsw guide any more. Try removing the drift pin at the #4 spot and see if your problem goes away. Keep in mind that if you do this it will be possible to overextend the jaws and they could fly off if you go too far out.
