crochet hook size

I've decided to do another one of my crazy projects. I've found a pattern for a lace tablecloth that I really like (circa 1959), my intention is to make enough of the squares to fit them all together to create a nice stole to wear on cool evenings -- it's not too fancy or lacy...

My question, the pattern says to use a size 13 crochet hook... I'm not sure what that translates into for modern (US) sizing... any help?

It's a very small steel hook. I think it's probably still an item. So that tells me the original pattern calls for very fine thread. If you aren't using such fine thread, you'll want a different hook, anyway...

(Still remember poking myself with a size 13 when I was a kid and learning from my Grandmother.)

Where is your pattern from ??? US has 2 kinds of size 13 for wool which converts to 8.5 mm or for Cotton which converts to o.75 mm In Knitting needles The UK 13 converts to USA 1 and 2.25 mm while the USA 13 converts to UK oo , 9 mm. Choose your needles and hooks to match the thread /wool you use. mirjam

It's an older pattern that I found for free on the internet. It's cotton thread, so I'm pretty sure that the size is 0.75mm... darn, that's tiny! EG

Why don't you make it with a fine yarn and a larger hook instead of cotton thread? That would probably be softer as well.

That's pretty much what I ended up doing. I couldn't find size 20 crochet cotton yesterday, but did find "bedspread weight". I'm actually very happy with the cotton thread I found, it's much softer than the other :) EG
