Re: See my socks Cher

Dennis and Gail,

I keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

The same thought that ran through Noreen's Don's head ran through mine -- Radon. It's a very bad problem in many areas and can really wreak havoc. Testers aren't expensive, and you might could ask your doctors if it could even possibly be a cause....

Another thought is deer tics and Lyme Disease. I've two good friends with completely different medical problems (one neurological and the other digestive tract related) that have completely deteriorated their systems for the last several years. After many years of being sick/completely disabled and going through treatments, medicines and operations with no improvement (and worsening/damage from same), they both were found to have lyme disease and that it had caused all their problems. I make sure that DH and I are checked every year for this even though my doctor thinks I'm crazy. I've just seen the devastation it's caused and get the test so that we could be immediately treated if we have it.

Gentle hugs, Eve

Eve, just a quick question about Lyme disease. Can it be cured, and if so would/could the damage done be reversed? Just curious... I know it can be treated if caught early, but I was wondering about the people (your friends) who have had it for years.

Gem,

Yes, Lyme Disease can be cured ... but only if caught early enough. The doctors and even health news reporters on tv say that if you see a bullseye shaped mark (red ring around the bite site) and/or experience flu-like symptoms, you should be checked. However, the mark often doesn't appear, and the flu-like symptoms are often so slight that they aren't given a second thought, if they happen at all. The bite itself is not painful and, in fact, isn't felt. My friends had no recollection of ANY indication that they'd been bitten.

I was reluctant to say for Dennis and Gail's sake, that if the Disease is not caught early enough, it cannot be cured. This is the case with both my friends. However, there still is an advantage to having found that this is their "root" problem -- it stopped procedures and treatments that were (literally) killing them. The one with the digestive troubles has had several operations. The other was treated for "nervous breakdown", hospitalized for long periods and given meds that have damaged his brain and was also given shock treatments that damaged him further even though he had physical disabilities (loss of use of one hand (curling) and inability to walk well -- obviously NOT symptoms of nervous breakdown or any mental disorder. Both cases are absolutely heartbreaking. At least knowing the cause (the Lyme Disease) has stopped well-meaning doctors and institutions from further damaging them.

Oh, and neither of these men live (or have ever lived) in rural areas. Both live in the suburbs of a large city and both worked IN the city. Aside from mowing their grass and enjoying their yards, they were not "outdoor" types ... and deer would be an extreme rarity to be seen anywhere near where they are. The tics are more prevalent in areas where deer reside, but they are elsewhere as well (often "ride on" mice too) -- so we all should be aware and take precautions against them. The test is a simple blood test -- that's what I request for DH and myself each year when our regular blood work-up is done.

Wow.. do you know what is really freaky? When I was a teenager, or in my

*very* early twenties, I actually had a red ring on my upper thigh that was there for a few days to a week. It faded away and I never thought anything more about it, and never told my Mom or my doctor because it went away and never came back. Two years ago when I was researching Fibromyalgia and all the lovely things that come along with it, I vaguely remember seeing some mention of Lyme Disease type symptoms (under one of the tag along problems that comes with Fibromyalgia) but I didn't go further into it because I figured I had enough to deal with rather than looking up new stuff to go along with it. I'll have to see if I can find that same website again, and find that reference to Lyme Disease.

Thank you for the insight, Eve!

Peace! Gem
