Wanted to learn something new last night...

so I finally opened my package of 4 double sided needles, cracked my knitting book open, and learned to knit tubes. It took several attempts to figure it out but then it went pretty smooth. I now have a pink tube and a white tube. It took more concentration than knitting on 2 needles and I dropped a bunch of stitches. Is 4 needle knitting used often or can most things be accomplished on circular needles? I wouldn't be too upset if I didn't have to use the 4 needle system again! Pam

Good for you, Pam! I prefer DPNs (4 needles, or 5) over circulars. When I use circulars to knit a tube, I fell as though I am working with spiders. That being said, I know many people who knit socks on circulars. I have never known anyone to do mittens that way, though.

Pam, I have always preferred to use 5 dps, it seems to be easier. If you are knitting seamless sweaters, dps are needed for cuffs and most of the sleeve if the sweater is small (think baby sweaters). Knitting any thing which is round also requires the use of dps since the center of the circle is too small to fit on circs. DA

Unless you use 2 circulars, or the magic loop method Love & higs Christine

Pam , it takes Time to get used to DP s [ double pointed] , but once you get the hang of it ,,,, there is no stopping you . I use both circulars and Dps ,,, each in other circumstances ,,,, mirjam

With 2 circs or one with the magic loop, working on 2 sides of it, same as the fingers. Or any sort of tube really, like socks Love & higs Christine

Sounds good, Pam ;-) soon it takes no more consentration than to knit on two needles! ...may be the two first rounds! But when you have got some knitted stuff to "hold", you will see it is no problem at all! Aud ;-)

Just why I don't make gloves, it's all too fiddly for me, dpns or circs. Mittens yes; gloves no! Are you feeling better? Love & higs Christine

I knit gloves and do it on double points. If you want fiddly, I will refer you to the gloves I knit for my granddaughter - but she loves them.

I also do mittens on double points - including "people mittens" which are sort of like hand puppets in that I put hair and faces on them. These are mittens except that the little finger is separate like a glove so that the thumb and little finger can be the arms and the remaining fingers have the face and hair or whatever. The kids love them.

The "people" mittens sound great Judy. And why were your granddaughter's gloves specially fiddly? Love & higs Christine

Because her hands are so little - this was DGD#3 who was just four. Her mommy and big sisters like gloves - so she wanted some too. The littlest finger of a four year old is not very big. Mittens are much easier for the little ones. Of course, that is when they like the "people" mittens best too - so there isn't much chance for me to avoid that little finger issue.

Right, I wondered if it was that, and I have to say you're the sort of granny to have!! I don't know if I'll be that dedicated when the time comes, not that there's much sign at the minute, and with the average age of first time mums in this country rising all the time who knows..... Still eating lightly. It is good that I am off school this week, though, as the bathroom is still very necessary, very often.
