Newbie - with dumb newbie questions

Hello to group. I could not find a newsgroup faq file so I'll just jump right in.

My Mother-in-law recently purchased a Husqvarna Viking Rose (I always thought Husky made only dirt bikes and chainsaws, hmm). She's looking for patterns, software and the like. She's been having me search Ebay for something called an 'amazing box' or a 'magic box'. I've found both, but don't know the difference. They go for about $200 on there and the local shop wants $400, wow!!

My wife and I (and kids) have some ideas on things we would like her to embroider. I have lots of graphics software (engineer/web designer/graphic artist) but apparently I need specialized software for use on her machine. Can I use any type of software (i.e. Photoshop) and then convert it for reading by her machine?

If I need to utizile special software, do you have any suggestions? She mentioned some software which will allow images to be made for digital pics or scans and I think she's leaning that way.

Being a huge Bon Jovi fan, I have some embroidery I'd like her to do with that (for myself only, I'm not worried about copyright b/c I'm not selling it or anything) as well as some specialized fonts that I have on my website logo which I'd like her to reproduce for a shirt logo. The font is a True Type font, free off the net, but if there is software required to add fonts, I need that too.

Are there any demos or trial versions of this type of software readily available on the net? The husky site had lots of software, but I had no idea on even which one to look at. Anyone purchase supplies, software, accessories off the net from someone they'd recommend?

TIA, Crew

Not dumb questions at all! It's not as easy at it may seem to convert from artwork, photos or whatever to embroidery. It takes a bit of practice, but hey, what doesn't?! Lots of free designs on the net to try out (once you have a card writing box) before expecting to create masterpieces yourself! Software available in demo versions is Embird. Read about at

It's freee for 30 days. With the main program you can convert to/from different formats, change sizes, combine designs and more. To make own designs from scratch or from cliparts, photos etc. you need digitizing software. There is a digitzing plug-in for Embird available as demo as well. It's not limited in time but in stitches so you cannot use it to sew big designs, but you can practise as much as you like!

Hi, Crew

There is another box, called Ultimate Box

I got mine on ebay for $165+postage (brand new from a dealer), and there were offers for $99, but shipping within US only (very sad!), and I was happy ever since.

Check

- it's a very good site about embroidery. You can buy Embird from them (a bit cheaper), they also have tutorials for it, and a lot of embroidery designs - freebies as well.

And I find some very useful advices about embroidery on
