Newbie questions

Hi all! I am new to scrapbooking, but not new to crafts in general. What happened is, I finally went through this big box of photos I had, and got inspired to do a scrapbook for my sister for her birthday.

I've got pictures of her as a kid, me and her together as kids, us with mom (who died when I was 13 and sis was 10), us with dad, her with her cat (deceased) her with the dog (also deceased) and pics of her current husband and their two kids. I'm also planning to take more pictures tomorrow (not telling her why, just that I feel like it) since I don't think I have any of her kids since last year and they sure change a lot in a year, huh?

Ok, here's my concerns. None of these have dates, because I suck. So, I have no idea what to write to go with any of them. Somehow I don't think "Leah and mom sometime in the 80's" is gonna cut it. I'm thinking of maybe writing her a poem that continues from one page to the next, what do y'all think? Something about time and memories and love and family . . . but not too corny I hope.

Another concern: She's totally a goth/punk chick. Her favorite color is black. She probably really won't enjoy anything too cutesy-poo. But, sorry, black and flames and demons just don't go with baby pictures! Any ideas for a happy medium?

Hi! Luna, Welcome to the group. One of my DD's is the same way. I think everything she owns has some black in it. I had a hard time starting her pregnancy and baby album. Then I found the new maternity line by Karen Foster and thought the colors there would work. I ffinished the first few pages and she loved the colors. She wants me to continue the color scheme through the baby book - She absolutely hates pink. Maybe the same color scheme will work for you. Look at the Karen foster page and scroll down to click on Moss texture plum glaze plum texture glazed canvas I've been using the maroon and moss green cardstock and deep plum black even works into the color arrangement

I love the idea of a poem through the album. I will have to remember that one. Sandy

Thanks! I'll be going to my crafts store tomorrow if I have time after photocopying the pictures, and I'll see what they have. But deep rich colors sounds like a great idea. Now I still have to come up with that poem . . .

Actually, I've changed my mind about the poem. I've found some really great quotes, especially these two, that are so absolutely perfect for my sister's kids:

Hey Luna! Welcome to the group. It sounds like a wonderful album you're planning for your DS. I think if you go with the heritage style...it would suit her well (can use a lot of black there) and if you like, you can change the photo's to b&w or sepia. As far as the journaling goes...how about things you can remember of your Mom's - like her favourite song, recipe, flowers, saying etc...that would bring back a lot of memories :) For her cat and dog - maybe the story of how she got them, quirky things they did...etc. Good luck and enjoy!

Hi Luna and welcome to the group! It sounds as if you have a great project in mind there. What fun you will have doing this! My oldest daughter made a Sisters scrapbook for my youngest daughter and I know how much it touched her heart. Maybe choose a color scheme for the whole book and go with the idea of a poem throughout. There are so many wonderful papers out there these days, I know something will strike you. Just go browse in your local scrapbook store . Nice to see you!!

Thanks! Good ideas! But I think I'm going to go with the quotes I found last night, because that way I can keep it consistent, and some of them are so funny, which I'm sure she'd appreciate.

Here they are in case anyone would like to see them:

What greater gift than the love of a cat? - Charles Dickens

Who among us hasn't envied a cat's ability to ignore the cares of daily life and to relax completely? -Karen Brademeyer (to go with the pic of the cat draped over the back of the chair, asleep)

In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this. -Terry Pratchett

No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch. -Leo Dworken

Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really. -Agnes Sligh Turnbull

Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot little puppies. -Gene Hill

The dog was created specially for children. He is the god of frolic. - Henry Ward Beecher

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too. -Samuel Butler

Having a sister is like having a best friend you can't get rid of. You know whatever you do, they'll still be there. -Amy Li

If you don't understand how a woman could both love her sister dearly and want to wring her neck at the same time, then you were probably an only child. -Linda Sunshine

Bless you, my darling, and remember you are always in the heart - oh tucked so close there is no chance of escape - of your sister.

-Katherine Mansfield

It is in the love of one's family only that heartfelt happiness is known. -Thomas Jefferson

Families are like fudge... mostly sweet with a few nuts. -Author Unknown

Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad. -Author Unknown (particularly relevant since her current husband is not the biological father of her first child, but he is a great dad)

(These last three are so perfect it's like those people have known my sister and her kids for years)

Boy, n.: a noise with dirt on it. -Not Your Average Dictionary

Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing. -Phyllis Diller

A child is a curly dimpled lunatic. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Lunda, Welcome to the group. Sounds like you are on a good track. Hope you scan the results for us to see. I too like the idea of the deep rich colors and the quotes you found are cute. I was thinking maybe you can accent your LOs with black corners, boarders or embellishments.

I would not let the unknown dates limit your inspiration. If you don't know the year, you may be able to determine the season or month. Go with it. When positioning LOs within a chronological album, not every page needs to have a date.

The key is to have fun. If it is from you, your sister will love it.

Thanks! I actually didn't really like the darker colors I found, and I spent an HOUR and a HALF just looking at paper at Michael's. Is that normal? omg. Anyway, the darker colors like the "heritage" themes that were suggested by someone else looked a bit too masculine, imo. What I ended up buying was something called a "Collage Pad" with the brand "Paper Passport" by Provo Craft. It's handmade textured paper, and they have pads with like, all neutral or all earth tones. I chose "Brights." Which actually aren't what I think of as bright. They're not like, neon, they're just really saturated. They're soooo pretty. Some even have sparkles! I couldn't find the exact thing I got on their website, because what they have listed is 12"x12", and what I got is an

8.5" x 5.25" pad. I also got some cardstock that coordinates, so I can have the patterned paper as the background, then a solid border around the photo, because I thought maybe having the pattern right next to the photograph would compete too much with it?

Anyway, I'm really excited to get started, but I still have to take more recent pictures (too rainy today) and get them all photocopied.

Hi Luna and welcome to RCS!!

I did not and still don't know dates of a lot of pix, but o the back especially if they were developed on or by KOdak processors the date may be encoded. Anyhow what I did with a lot that I had was "fall of 88" or "mid 80's imeframe". I don't know if this will help or not, but have fun wahtever you do!

I see you've gotten lots of suggestions so I won't try any. Just wanted to say welcome to the group and I hope you will share your completed project with us before giving it to your sister.

Luna, I was thinking about the date problem and thought maybe a caption under the photos reading "Do you remember this?" "Wasn't that a riot?"

Hey, by the way, I just googled this group and saw some posts from you from last month on making your own paper. How cool! I'm gonna try that sometime. I don't know if you've seen my website, but I already do web background patterns, and I've got a new (used) printer coming my way, so if it works well I may very well do that myself!!

Luna, I took a look at your website. Those backgrounds will make some awesome scrapbooking papers.

BTW -- your new haircut suits you. Very attractive!

I agree, the haircut does great things to your face and especially your eyes! I was actually looking for a way to contact you via email. For some reason this old computer won't let me reply to a post privately. I get some sort of request for a password for a secure website. I can't wait to get my laptop back!

Nah, I'd have to make new ones. Those are only 72dpi, wouldn't print well. I don't have the original Photoshop files anymore, because they were on the computer that was stolen.

Thanks! It's grown out quite a bit now. I'm at that stage where I need to decide if I want to keep it short or grow it long again.
