Newbie with a couple of questions

Hi there, I've recently started to lurk here and I have a couple of questions about the newsgroup:

You seem to be involved in a great many good works, the hugs and charity quilts especially. I've heard of the hug blocks, are they a standard size? Are there any rules about the fabric/colours?

I love the fact that this feels like a real global community of similarly interested people (I can't say like-minded as there is lots of diversity). You support one another and seem to find a way to brighten even the darkest of days. The idea of squishies and uglies is fab. I saw the recent directories reminder - is this open to all? How does it work?

Come to think of it is there a faq I can access? I tried via a couple of old links but didn't get anywhere. I have a million and one little questions which I'm sure would be in there somewhere.

Thanks for the laughs and ideas so far, I hope to get up the nerve to post more soon.

Great! We'd love to see them! :)

It all takes practice, as anything does.

Mariner's compasses are lovely; I've done a couple, though one is better than the other. As for patterns, your best bet is to get Judy Mathieson's book; her technique will eliminate many potential pitfalls. :)

LOL! I do love milk chocolate, but dark is occasionally alright.

Those would be your QIs (quilt inspectors ), though I sort of suspect that the "large hairy thing" is probably your DH (dear, dratted, etc., husband)?

Yes, you really are lucky in that, and I'm sure you're right about meeting some of the group in May there. :)

thanks so much, Pat. i do have a phone number for them and doubled checked online that its still the same. i was just curious how far from them you were. i do understand the traffic woes that can happen on any given day. we get those here too cept we call it dodge'n sheep, lol. gee only 40miles, just a hop, skip and a jump from them. they have a shop in Hay that does picture framing and whatever else, not too sure what it might be. i dont think they do any books but i dont keep up with the runnings of the business so who knows. i know Hay is known for their books and book festival each yr. he could give them a howdy from me if he finds them and has a few spare minutes. not sure of the shop name. the online search didnt find a website or shop name that i could recognize so not much help other than giving you their name. let me know, eh. i wish she had some interest in puters so we could chat on messenger often or just emailing now and then would be good too. sigh... shes english and hes a kiwi, they moved back to the UK in about 16yrs ago now. their kids and mine were best friends back then as were she and i. :( manys the day i wish she was still here just for the friendship and those bitch days we all need sometimes. unfortunately they never planned on returning here. they went for the first 2 yrs on trial, then returned, sold the house/stuff and made Hay their permanent home. she is a nurse and had only just got back into the work force the yr they decided to give england a fair go and they up and went in short time. i'm sure she had many reservations as she loved nursing but her dh was a puter guy and he'd had enough of that too so he switched to the business they do now, learning from her sister/bil on the job as it were. the rest is history. here we all are yearrrrrrrrs later, older, greyer, bigger and so far apart. tis rather sad indeed, well for me it is anyhow. thanks for that info tho. cheers and happy eggnog'n in the UK, brrrrrrrr. jeanne
