Intro and a couple of questions

Hello rec.crafts.textiles.yarn on Usenet. My name is Nadine, and I am a mathematics savant. My math ability is quite useful, as I knit, and sometimes crochet. I also sew. I live in Ashville, NC, USA, and am semi-retired. I found you via Googlegroups. My questions are as follows: Because of my 'gift', I can look at different fashions and estimate increases, decreases, pattern stitches, etc. to make various items, and I do this quite often. If I write out what I've done via my ability, how do I know whether it's ...errr... "been-done" by someone else? Second, my mother, (RIP) used to make hand-knits, specifically Poncho's and moccosins and sell them, back in the seventies. These were made from patterns she bought from the Sunday newspaper, in the Lifestyle section. What I wonder is, was it even legal for her to sell handknits from a printed pattern? Thirdly, and finally, I have heard, from various unconfirmed sources that if a person changes a pattern to suit themselves, or make it better, that if it has been altered 10 percent, it is not an infringement. I look forward to learning the truthful answers to my questions. Nadine Ashville, NC-USA

Hi Nadine,

I wanted to say welcome to this great group. My Mom used to buy patterns from the "Grit" paper and sell the finished item too and back in the 50's we never thought about copyright.

Hugs,

Nora

Nadine, As a former employee of McCall's, I can appreciate your wanting sound answers. I have seen famous haute couture designs released at various runway shows that appear to be the same dress, cloak, capri's, whatever, and each claimed by a different designer. I worked in the fashion industry for 20 years before cancer forced me to stop working. I would suggest, though, that you research your own questions somewhere other than Usenet, as you will only find "opinions" here. HTH, Nate

Welcome to the newsgroup, Nadine!

Nora, wasn't this discussed on the newsgroup before? I was pretty sure it was, and it was established that (unless it specifically says on the pattern that you can't sell the finished product) what people are selling is their

*work* (and time put in on the work) and therefore not the pattern, so there is no copyright infringement taking place.

used a much lighter and thinner mohair yarn. But you start down back in the end, knit the pattern, and stop when it is big enough. That way, you can use which yarn you want.AUD ;-))

I make them!

Or, say, I made them! I made so many different that I got tired of them, and that is impossible to be, if you shal give each and everyone a personality, so then I stopped! AUD ;-))

Well, they are really cute! I bet you sold a lot when you were making them. They'd likely be pretty big sellers at craft shows over here.... but even if I had the pattern, I doubt that I'd have the patience to make them.

Peace! Gemini

Thank you for the welcome, Gemini, and the reference to the Grit paper that... oh who was it... memory is short... oh, okay, Nora ... also made; my dear departed Dad subscribed to it as well! Nadine

Gemini, it was a Cristmas gift for my MIL, and SHE wear it often. With that yarn, it became so leight weighted, that I think it is comfortable to put around your shoulders when watching TV, for one thing. I see she keeps it close to her place! I am glad she likes it, it is always an extra pleasure to see a gift being used, isn't it?

Glad you like it too! AUD ;-)

It really is nice when you see a gift being used! My Mom loved her afghan that I made for her, and also the "wheelchair lapghan" that I made for her shortly before she passed away. Of course my Mom loved everything I made, whether it was for her or not... and she was my best (kindest) critic when it came to my writing as well. In my part of the note that she left with her will she said that she really hopes that someday I will be published. Since it doesn't look like well-known publishers are interested, I may end up having to publish my own writing... hopefully that would still please my Mom. :o)

Peace! Gemini
