A couple questions

Here's my situation. On March 10, our church is starting a scrapbooking class. I'm needing to come up with a LO that I can teach them. But I'm having a hard time figuring out a generic LO that anyone can use! I want their first LO to be one that they'll be proud of so they'll come back for more. I don't know who's coming at all. I know a few of the ladies from church are coming, but I don't know how many from the surrounding community are coming. For those from the community, I don't know marital status, whether or not they have children in their life, pets or no pets, ages, or even if they have someone in their life who loves them. I know nothing, which is making it difficult to find a LO theme/title that anyone can use, no matter their situation.

So...here's my questions.

  1. If you were to teach a scrapbooking class to brand new scrappers, and needed a LO that they could make and take home, what theme/subject/title would you use for the LO?

  1. What was the theme or title of your first LO? (Mine was the title page for Bagheera's memory book.)

Maybe go for a birthday theme. It's generic and everyone has birthdays.

My first layout was for an album that I made for my MIL and it was a birthday theme.

Hope this helps.

Think since you are a Stampin' Up gal this could possibly be easy. I think what works out nice in the Stamp Camps is when doing cards the ladies have several different sentiment stamps so you can make your card a thank you card, a birthday card etc. Find a stamp set that the ladies could make a LO and use a different sentiment to suit their desire. Or you could have some already printed that say something like... "You're so cute!" "A day in the life..." "Special Day" I'm just thinking off the top of my head here... I'm sure you could be more creative.

My first page was my son's birth.

Since you do not know anything or who, what I would to start out, like in school make a couple samples of something simple, subject neutral.

EXAMPLE: Just a couple pictures of say your kids, you and dh, pets and home shots.

Pick a solid cs background with mats for the pix, and using same pix make the same page using patterned paper. This could show how different just something simple iike choice of paper can add to a lo.

Then using those simple lo's thinking about the amount of money or availability of embellishments to some, show how using a couple stickers, stamping (Simple at first then go to embossing, mixing colors, etc) or adding eyelets, fibers and whatever else WE USE can really add to the theme and personality of the lo.

Does this make sense? Then as classes evolve, show how using those SAME pix, to cut the pictures, frame them, stamp paper mats, or backgrounds, and so on. I use the example of CUTTING the actual pix as we have discussed that in here how intimidating that can be at first! You can show them in these later classes how even placin pictures different way can totally transform the lo, i.e color blocking, straight lines, placing at a angle and even overlapping.

Hope this all makes sense and gives you some ideas where to start and where yu can go. Another idea is how to take and amke your own mixed pattern paper using pieces an scraps and of course, doNOT forget to tell them the importance of keeping and using scraps!!!

Good Luck and Have Fun!!

What about a seasonal LO like snow? or spring? or holidays?

My first LO was pictures from my Grandmother's 82nd birthday party.

The 1st LO page I did my LSS they have FREE INTRO to SCRAPBOOKING classes using the SEASONS as the 1st LO.

There was a bunch of samples up on the wall to get ideas.

Mine was a SUMMER theme, not knowing what to expect, which pics to bring w/me...I didn't have many printed.

So they're was a choice to use the photo blank cards if you didn't have pics w/you. Then just add them in later.

I had a few pics of my BF using those pics. The 1st time we met was On Halloween but they're was a pic of both of us taken in the summertime aboard one of the Tall Ships when they were docked in Glen Cove for the CA Computer Associates was one of the sponsors.

So I used this pic.

There was a bunch of SCENIC ROUTE and BASIC GREY papers to choose from, a quote to punch out, many different font types of the same quote.

I found out that inking the edges of everything made the LO look really wow. Also the placement of different papers on the page, how tearing them was really kewl, I kinda used part of my scraps in the LO made it look really neat. Punching out different shapes to put pics on, corner punches, etc. Was going to use some MM rub on letters, but sorting through them all not too many the same was left.

I titled my LO BEST FRIENDS then and now. Adding the other Halloween pic in too.

There wasn't enough time to finish the page there. Got to see how strong those glue dots really are when you kiss it to the shell for the LO.

I gotta go back for the FREE Intro to STAMPING class...never got to take it there yet.

Since Easter is coming up you could do an Easter/Spring layout. You wouldn't have to necessarily use flowery paper, you could use bright colors. Don't stress yourself out trying to pick the perfect theme and paper for everyone. You won't be able to do it. Just pick paper and a theme that you like and something that is easy for beginners to do. Then during your class, you can ask them what types of things they would like to do for future classes. No matter what you choose some will like it and some won't but they will have fun and learn the techniques you are teaching them.

I don't remember what my first layout was, but I think it was pictures of my daughter.

How about Love?

We all love something or someone.

My first layout was WAAAAAAY back in 1984/1985 when a group of friends and I went to AdventureLand in Huntington Long Island.

My first theme album was way back in 1986 when I went to Northern Ireland for an international peace conference as a delegate.

I would suggest to your class to bring 2 or 3 pics with them to scrap to start off with. I liked using the seasons suggestion by Sandy, or a maybe a vacation or special event . My first LO was our trip to Rock City at Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga.

The first page I scrapped was of my neice in a gift album for my sister. I've been to a couple of Stampin Up scrap days, and we make 3 two page layouts there. We don't bring any pics, just make the pages. This last time we did a Christmas, birthday, and Valentine's Day page. I think a birthday or season's would be good for a first page class. Maybe make a variation with different paper so they can see different ideas.

A birthday theme is definately a possibility. It's definately going to be a simple layout this first time around.

"Think since you are a Stampin' Up gal this could possibly be easy."

I know! I was shocked at myself that I was having issues with it. LOL I do like your idea of the different sentiments. I hadn't thought about that. DUH! I could have different titles put together and they can just pick which title they want. Or different kits (paper/cardstock/etc) fitting the different titles, but every kit makes the same LO. That would work I think!

You hit some good points Dave. Thanks! It's definately going to be a simple LO to start with, then adding techniques as we go. I sometimes forget what it was like to be a beginner scrapper! That feelign of "It's ok to cut my picture????"

Snow? What's snow? LOL A seasonal or holiday LO would work, too. So far, you guys are giving me too many good ideas and I can't decide! LOL

You are so right Cathy. I've been trying so hard to find a theme/LO for everyone, and it's just not possible. For future LO's, I'm going to have one of them pick a theme. If nothing else, it will give them input.

I've thought about love, too.

To my knowledge, no one has called the church asking anything about the class. I'm hoping they'll bring pics, but they may not. This first class is really going to be one of those "I have no idea what to expect" things. LOL The one thing I do know, is that before they leave the first class, I hope to have a theme picked for the next one so they know what type of pics to bring.

Boy, you guys had lots of good ideas. Too many! LOL However, you really did help me make some decisions. Rather than going with one particular theme, I'll make up different themed kits. There will be the same number of pieces in each, and since I'll walk them through the LO, the placement of everything will be the same. They'll just be different themes, colors, patterned paper, etc.

Things will be really simple this first time around, no spiffy techniques. I'm thinking some fibers or maybe a brad or two for embellishments...like on a tag. Just simple embellishments, but enough to add to the overall LO.

Once I have a sample LO made up for them, I'll upload it and let you all know. Thank you for your input!
