OFF TOPIC - for a teacher or three

You made me go and read the report! It is an ongoing study, with several phases on OCD. I was part of phase 1.

Phase 1 (1995-2000)." Over 800 individuals from more than 150 families were interviewed. results indicate that OCD occurs more frequently in certain families.Relatives of people with OCD are 5 times more likely to have OCD than are relatives of people without OCD "

Phases 2 and 3.(2000 to 2007)paraphrasing this one.Over 300 Families with 2 or more individuals with OCD were interviewed and completed the first large genome-wide linkage scan of OCD. Suggestive linkage signals found on regions of chromosomes 1,3,6,7,and 15. Now fine-maping such areas.

Phase 4 will interview and collect DNA samples from 2000 individuals with OCD and their parents in order to find smaller chromosome linkage.

They say this is an exciting start, but it is IMPORTANT to note that they have not yet found any genes or specific genetic markers for OCD. Nor is there any genetic test available for the identification of OCD.

That was page 1...there are more pages with lots of bibliography amd other details .

I wonder how would they ever exclude environmental factors? If children grow up in a house where the five-second rule never applies and hands are washed more routinely than most, wouldn't they be more likely to continue these patterns in the next generation?

Unless they can find more people like my DS...grew up in a family of clutterers, but now keeps an immaculate house with little "stuff" around. (Not bad....just different. We're each a little off-center; neither of us at extremes.)

Right now, I'm thinking we do the application and think about the testing come spring.

Is South Hadley near you???

I remember when I had to go down to Fells Point for the interview, it took almost 4 hours, and was extremely detailed, so maybe such things are included in the study. My son had to do his interview by mail, since he was stationed in Florida, but we were going to be in the Baltimore area anyway, visiting DD and GKs.

Sounds reasonable. No point in closing the door yet.

Nah, South Hadley is near Amhearst. They use Mount Holyoke's campus.

(image of me slapping myself upside the head) I should've remembered that. My cousin's son is a school near there and his GF is at MH.

Oooooo! Isn't that interesting? Thanks for taking the trouble, Gill. My DS has OCD, and it's generally thought to be a by-product of his autism. I often wonder, though, since ritualistic behaviours are strong in our family. It's also interesting to note that I'm not biologically related to my parents and so... what the?

There's always the possibility that learned responses to things like stress can contribute to anxiety which then triggers OCD or similar behaviours. Probably, the heritability of OCD will only be proven once and for all when genetic markers are discovered. Same as autism, I s'pose.

So many of these disorders seem to be mysteriously similar: OCD, autism, ADHD, Tourette's, OCPD and so on. The more people I get to know, the more I'm convinced there's absolutely no such thing as 'normal'. LOL! But I guess you already knew that? ;-D

Blasted button! I realised the last sentence sounds as though I think you're not normal, Gill. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! That's not what I meant, of course, I meant I guess you already knew that *I'm* not normal. I tried to cancel the message to fix it, but for once it sent like lightning. =:-0 Sorry about that!

Trish,

Email me you home addrss, and I will mail what I occasionally receive from the research folks. As I said, there are pages of credits, and that was a summary. I receive these rports very rarely, but will happily make a copy and send to you. I guess not snail mail, but airmail.

Remember when that was the fastest thing around??
