Tatting instruction

I live in the Boston area and want to learn to tat with a shuttle. I'm usually pretty good with learning stuff from books, but I have to confess shuttle tatting has me at a standstill. I understand needle tatting, that was pretty straightforward, but this just isn't sinking in. Is there anyone in the Boston area who might consider teaching me? Naturally I would compensate them for their time & trouble... Thanks for any suggestions, and thanks to Cross Stitch Unlimited in Arlington who told me about this group!

I just grinned and grinned when I read this. It's been so long since someone posted a note on "not getting" shuttle tatting. :-)

You are not alone, so don't kick yourself. It took me forever to figure it out. I made two lace edgings and then never picked it up again. I wonder if I'd even remember how?

I hope someone steers you in the right direction. Just wanted to post to say: don't give up! You'll get it. And don't feel alone in your struggles.

I taught myself with a videotape from the library. It was excellent, she was an American. Her tip starting out was to use two different colours so you can see instantly whether you are getting the stitch right.

It truly is not difficult, just a knack of how to make the stitch and once you get it, after quite a bit of trial and error, the rest is easy. It has great benefits as a very portable project, though what they make of shuttles in airport security, I don't know. Might pay to use a plastic one which would not show up.

I'm a self-taught shuttle tatter. I feel your pain! I think it took me a couple months and several books before I got the most basic thing--transferring the knot.

Once you do the wrap and pass, the knot is on the right hand string, you have to transfer it to the left hand string (ring, chain whichever) with a gentle tug on the right hand string, while keeping the left hand one tight.

Hope this doesn't make it more confusing, but that is the part that was my "AHA" moment!
