OT: Getting Melted Plastic off Revere Ware

Hiya,

I haven't posted in ages, but I do try to keep up with the group.

My DH (you can figure out which "D") turned on the wrong burner on the stove and melted a plastic glass that was sitting inside my grandfather's Revere ware pot. I think he poured water into it once he realized his mistake and I suspect that only made things worse. As I recall, if you let this kind of boo-boo cool slowly, you can usually salvage things, but I now have a pot with a plastic smear on the inside. Anyone know how I can remove the plastic so that I can use the pot again?

I told DH that he owes me a new pot, but this one has some sentimental value. I can always shine up the copper bottom and hang it on the wall as decoration if I can't save it, but I would like to use it if possible.

Thanks so much, Janet of Gar (where Autumn has given us a spot of rain and some decent temps)

Well, when I want to get wax out of my votives I put them in the freezer, it might work for the plastic. It certainly can't hurt.

I'm glad to see you are still around :-)

I'd gently heat the pan till the plastic is squidgy but not anywhere near liquid and try to remove it while still warm

Howdy!

I have Revere Ware, haven't used it since the class/solid surface cooktop was installed. However, I remember doing something similar, a kid set a fast-food plastic cup beside the hot pan. We have a steaming-hot-water spigot added to the sink so I let that hot-hot water trickle over the plastic spot until it the plastic was soft, scraped it off w/ popsicle stick (no scratching). Pouring boiling-hot water over the plastic might work, inside the pan as well as outside. Good luck! Yeah, he owes you a replacement pot and about a month's worth of demonstrations of how he cooks with it. You, of course, will be in the lounge with a cool drink, quilting and waiting for dinner. ;-D

Cheers! Ragmop/Sandy --happy to see our Janet from the Land of Gar

I'd take it outside and toast it on the cajun cooker for a bit, to burn off the plastic. Then hand dh the (cooled) pot and a stainless steel choregirl.
