It's because the commercial sites make money on the side by selling your e-mail address to list services.

Some of these evil weasels have even created https sites, so one need be aware of what the full address is. The fundamental rule should be, unless you are absolutely certain that you are on a secure page on the vendor's own site, don't enter private info.
