VINTAGE SINGER 306W

I just aquired, from a friend, a beatiful Singer 306W sewing machine. It came without a power cord, so I found one. It gets power, but sounds like the motor is spinning, and no action. Is there an oiling diagram, or belt diagram, something to give me a hint as to what the problem might be?

machine. It

sounds like

diagram, or belt

might be?

Is there a belt connected from the motor pully to the handwheel ?

If this is not a potted or geared drive machine, which i do not believe it is, then there should be a belt connecting the motor pully to the handwheel .

Is the top motion clutch engaged or is the handwheel spinning but the machine is not running ? When you turn the handwheel manually does the needle bar move ?

There is a big silver knob on the handwheel that acts as a stop motion clutch. Twist it clockwise a bit to engage power to the machine and turn it counter clockwise a bit to disengage power to the machine.

Just to piggyback on Robb's reply, the 306 has a cleated drive belt on the inside which is also driven by the external motor.

These internal belts are no longer available, so hopefully yours is intact.

The 319 has the same internal cleated belt setup, and you can see what it looks like here, scroll down about half way:
