Singer 758 Timing Belt

HELP!!!

Friend's 40yr. old Singer 758 machine was working "OK" last time.... Eventually, machine was completely bound-up, with motor unable to turn. A quick look showed that the plastic bevel gears below the bobbin mechanism, were packed solid with lint. I cleaned every speck out,,, nothing seems bent, broken, worn, -timing belt OK, everything turns free and easy,,, but timing is way off--- needle strikes bobbin mechanism quite solidly.

1)Could the bevel gears have jumped a tooth??? 2)Could the timing belt have jumped a cog???? 3)What should the relationship of the upper-to-lower shaft be??? How about the procedure for establishing it when installing a timing belt???

Thanks Much!!!

It is very likely the timing belt is worn and needs replacing. Very common on those at this point in time. You will see on the needle bar 2 lines, these are timing marks. The upper one is bottom dead center. When the needle is in the lowest position that line should be even with the lower needle bar bushing. When you turn the machine in the operating direct the lower line comes up to that same point that is when the point of the hook must be central to the needle and just above the eye. If the belt is bad it will continue to go out of time

That is what I gave you You can test the belt simply by putting pressure with your finger on the hook gear and watch the belt if it starts to jump up over the teeth it is time to have it replaced.

I had this problem with my Singer 756 all of a sudden. Turns out I did not have my stitch selector engaged. Machine worked perfectly after I changed the stitch from straight to zigzag. In the meantime I purchased a repair manual on eBay for the 750 series machines for $10.

I also found information on fixing the timing at this web site -

I discovered that the "sewvacdoctor" has a place of business not far from me. I fixed my problem when I waspreparing the machine to take to him to be fixed.Pat in NJ
