Here's the story for those who've already been there:

We had a dog when I had just gotten out of college, a standard schnauzer named Schatze. Schatze was a very intelligent dog, and quite mischievous. She had quite a bunch of quirks that made her adorable: a fondness for tennis balls, bedroom slippers, and hot tea, and a passion for fruit. If I were eating an apple, the dog would sit at my feet and gaze longingly at me until I was done; I never had to throw away an apple core. Bananas, grapefruit rinds, grapes were all on the menu.

My parents lived on what once had been a chicken farm. The huge barn was (and is) still there, as well as some overgrown patches of perennial vegetables like asparagus and rhubarb. There was a patch of raspberry canes way out near the woods which, even though they were untended, were still very productive. A friend of mine and I decide to go raspberry picking one summer day to get our fill of berries before the birds did. Schatze loved going for walks and so followed us.

Rustle, rustle. Yip! We turned around to see the dog take a chomp a bunch of ripe berries and get a mouthful of thorns for her trouble. Well, that'll fix her funny wagon, we laughed, and kept on picking.

A few minutes later: Rustle, rustle. We turned around again to see Schatze ever so carefully plucking berries from the canes with her lips, and looking very pleased with herself.

-----------------------------------------

I forgot to mention that Schatze was also terrified of turtles -- but that's another story. :o)

Just gorgeous! If you are planning on putting this piece on eBay, I would include that sweet story along with it. I know it touched my heart. =o)

Awwwwwwww! Great story! They are so funny!

We had a friend with a part Pekinese. Her husband came in one day, saying he didn't know what had gotten into the garden! Something had eaten the bottoms of all the bell peppers! Poor little dog, that was all she could reach! (They caught her at it later on and solved the mystery.)

And while I'm reading this I'm sitting here eating a big bowl of raspberry sorbet. Raspberries are my favorite fruit. I have a patch of canes in my back yard. Right by my studio. Barbara Dream Master
