Are you serious? (Or INSANE?) About the painting? You must be nuts, my dearest Lola.

Mostly we won't be painting -- the colors on the walls are quite nice, and we can live with them for a while, maybe even keep some. I forgot my camera when the inspection took place, so I got no pics of the inside the 2nd time I went. But I have to meet with the architect who's doing our ramps, so I'll be going back. (The time before, my memory card ran out before I was done, dammit) I keep forgetting which colors are where.....

But man, I DO want to repaint the kitchen cupboards/cabinets! I think they're GREY......BLECCH With modern brushed-steel knobs, totally wrong for a CA Bungalow of that era. (Need crystal knobs and handles in there) But that's not a priority now. We gotta tear up the carpet before we move in -- Kevin says no, not now -- but HELL YEAH! You know it won't get torn out after we move into those rooms, come ON. (One is my studio, and you KNOW what the furniture in there is like -- it weighs ten tons.)

I'm go> Holy crap! I bet that was exciting for him, and TOTALLY stressful for

OK, yes, I am insane! I forgot about that part. ;)

Crystal knobs would totally make all the difference in the world. I can never quite get around to painting my cabinets... I've been meaning to for the last two years. I think I need a painting party!

I cannot WAIT to see your house! I'll give you some time to get settled, though. And I do, totally, agree that the carpet needs to go before you move > Are you serious? (Or INSANE?) About the painting? You must be nuts,

This reminds me of Marcia Parker's house (Beautiful Beads

among other things I have one of her marvelous goddess beads, like on her opening page) in Oakland near the Berkeley border to the West of College. And her house reminded me exactly of my mother's parents' house on Mandana off Lakeshore in Oakland. Including the roses and lemons. Does you house have odd, wide, wonderful openings to living room and dining room? And a breakfast nook? Many of those houses also had glass fronted cabinets in the dining room. And I know exactly the crystal cabinet knobs you mean -- with facets. Those houses also were built when there were fewer neighbors, and when children played outdoors. So there were lots of windows.

The house I grew up in, also off Lakeshore in Oakland, was built around 1930 and was bigger with a slightly more formal lay out. My rich sister is in the Leimert section of Oakland, and also in a cute little house built around

1920. Those houses are wonderful, with lots of character.

I'm so glad you'll be in one. How long 'til the ramps and rugs are done?

~~~~~~I don't believe ours does. (You know my memory)
~~~~~~~~Yup! SUNLIGHT in our bedroom at last!

~~~~~~I'm not really sure -- and you know how those things go. They often take longer than you expect them to.
I'm just glad I can finally unpack.....my inner mentality has been that of temporary-housing since the 1970s. I lived out of a suitcase for about 3 years total, in fact. I really, really need this house.
no comment (as in: I seriously doubt it - but then, that may depend on compared to who :-) - I email you that one )
we've been meaning to paint ours for 16 (yes, years).
if you have allergies, rip out all carpet and never put it back ... (easy for me to say, we have hardwood floors, and, yes, there's still some carpeting waiting to be ripped out too )
Maren (Berkeley? I may have an hour or two in Oakland on the way back
- hoping I'm not getting stuck in LAX -, but on July 4.)
Congrats on the house. Are you using a moving company to move your things? If so, please visit this site before choosing one:
I don't want anyone to go through a horrendous move like my last one. I'm still finding things missing. The heartbreaker was not my collection of antique bottles or Mardi Gras masks that have gone astray, but the ashes of my two furbabies, Mom and Bobo. I have not completely unpacked, either, This is not my home, only a place to keep my belongings for a while.
Absolutely!! I went through the same thing of feeling temporarily housed for quite a few years (since the mid-80's). I moved around a lot, for adventure, and as a way of running away from depression. When we bought our lovely little house 3 years ago, part of me that has felt homeless was able to relax and settle. It has made such a difference. I don't regret the travelling around I/we did, but am so ready to be in one place and have the deeper experiences that can come from slowing down and paying attention to being and becoming in a chosen space. The gypsy has landed :-) . I hope your new house will be a wonderful haven where you can thrive and grow.
LOL Maren! :)
Hah! That's us in another 14 years. I did paint half a wall in the kitchen last month. Now there are 4 different shades of green in there. Fugh.
I totally agree! Carpet I am not such a procrastinator about - I got rid of it right away in my old house, and luckily we had none in this house to begin with.
One of the best parts, as you know, Lola baby, is that I can go out, garden, and be in a private place. Even the big garden I created in the student housing we lived in for 3 years was a public thing. Being a recovering agoraphobic (meaning I fight it every day), I need a place where I can be outside and not in other people's space, but ALONE. Just to decompress. Now I have a little yard of my own where I can do that. No one else will just happen to walk in. Just serenity......I don't even remember what that feels like.....
And...and.....everything else!! I'm planting deep violet perennial morning glories around Kevin's ramp railing once it gets built. We're going to Ohmega Salvage's yards to find an OLD door for his ramp entrance. I'm trying to pack, and would be hysterical if not for Becki's blessed help in that area.
I just can't wait til September, when the dust will have settled a little. Of course, then is when we'll be scrambl> Dr. Sooz wrote:
