Category change on eBay?

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Kandice Seeber" :

]The ones I am seeing on ebay are Czech pressed glass or firepolished. I ]have seen very few Czech lampwork like the ones you are talking about on ]ebay, in this category. For some reason many sellers don't know or don't ]care about the difference between Czech glass beads which are crystal or ]firepolish or pressed, and Czech lampwork beads. ]I also see a lot of silver in the lampwork category, as well as tools, large ]miscellaneous bead lots and other things that totally don't go there.

okay - just double checking. it really doesn't affect me, as i won't go to e-bay. but after seeing the film about the Czech lampworkers [thank you, Nicole!], i wanted to be clear what we were talking about.

that said, there are some big differences between Czech handmade, Chinese handmade, and India handmade, and US/Canada/Australia/English handmade [did i cover everyone?]. not only in quality sometimes, but also in technique and finish.

personally, i think e-bay's whole system needs major overhauling. it's just one number in a list of why i don't bother with them - give me an artist/wholesale/retail outlet online any day. [with the exception of Rio, and i understand why they don't have one - it's probably a good thing, for me.]

They're nice, but they don't belong in the same category as self-representing artists.

I place most of my orders online with Rio... you still have to have the catalog, but they have a nice online form you can fill out. :)

uh-oh. now i'm REALLY in trouble!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i've been drooling over the tools catalog for months now.

writing it down means i take more time to decide what i really need and can afford . . . . and everything is iffy right now . . . . . . with monthly bills being almost exactly my salary.

no - i understand that. i just hate to see them lumped in with some of the others.

I woefully agree with you Su. I hate having non-US lampworkers in another category. I think self-represented artists is much better and we'll get to see more beauties from around the world in one category.

And we also should not forget that there are self representing artists in Czech too.

My silversmithing class is where I first learned about Rio. I think I have all their catalogues.

Vicki, with all the jewelry work you're doing, do you still have time for beading?

believe it or no, i'm trying to tie the two together. part of what i'm trying to do is to create findings for others to use. but right now, with having to type for a living, i haven't been able to bead for a long time. and it's really bugging me!

I sent off an email too. I suggested 2 categories and I forgot to suggest a

3rd.

I said should be 1- self representing (me, you, artists that make the beads)

2 - Other (china, india, mass produced and those being sold by people that didn't make the beads

I forgot to add #3 - supplies (frit, glass, tools, etc).

SUPPLIES! Of COURSE! Dang. That's an important and ever-growing category... although it really would go under "Crafts - Supplies - Glass Art Supplies - Lampworking Supplies", I think.

The ones I bought are even nicer, are tiny, and cost less. His color use is different from what is used in US and Western Europe. His Czech palette was perfect for beads for my DIL.
