In support of Kalera's move to encourage SRA artists on eBay.com

I'm starting this discussion here and also on rcb for the purpose of helping get the ball rolling and get people to think about how to find good lampwork on eBay. Kalera has been talking this idea up on LampworkETC and I think that it also needs to come out here too where not only beadmakers but those as affected by the issue, bead buyers are to be found.

Everyone knows about AH and the other mass-producers flooding the market in eBay, and the problems facing self-representing artists. There is a place for the SRA lampworkers to list, in an existing SRA category but understandably many people who make their living either entirely or partially on eBay are worried about moving out of the 'lampwork' listing categories to the SRA one. I can understand that.

I can also say that in our listings on eBay.com in the SRA category, we had new bidders, people who probably would not look in 'lampwork' either due to not being interested in beads per se or because the category is so heavily clogged with mass-produced beads masquerading as 'artisan' beads. We didn't lose any money, our sales were as good, and we're planning on kicking the dust of 'lampwork' from our arty shoes and moving our auctions on eBay.com to the SRA category.

If people are aware of the category and why we're doing this along with other artists, and where we're going then they'll follow. Mike's no Kevin Costner but we believe that if you build something up people will find you.

So, here's the link to the category. We're not there at the moment as our listings start in the evening on Thursdays but we're not simply concerned about ourselves but about everyone giving it a chance. Other people have spoken strongly about this in the lampwork forums but that's preaching partly to the choir, we need to give this information out to the people who will come, look and hopefully buy the work of SRAs.

So, come to the SRA categories on eBay and have a look around.

Su, I applaud Kalera's and your efforts in listing in the SRA category. I don't know how much the listing fees are with EBay, but I wonder if you should consider listing in both the Lampwork and the SRA categories, temporarily as a crossover plan?

I applaud them both also, as well as the other artists who have already begun listing their work in that catagory. That's a good suggestion Patti, it is exactly what I've been thinking about today. I have no idea how much it would cost to list in two catagories, but I don't think it is cheap. I am listing a new auction tonight so I will check into this while I'm listing.

I found that when we list on eBay.co.uk that it doesn't matter that we're not in the lampwork category at all, so listing in SRA alone may be worth the while. I am going to give it a try.

I know eBay isn't perfect, far from it, but for many people it's the place they feel safe or happy with, and why not try all avenues before dumping it entirely? So, the SRA is where you'll find us tonight on eBay.com.

Actually, the reasons for moving to SRA on eBay apply even more to moving to JustBeads. And I would very much like to get away from the faceless megalithic eBay.

Tina, I would love to not list on eBay too, but if I do, I prefer to have a place where it's not crowded with mass-produced drek.

As it is, we're on eBay.co.uk this week as our lovely UK customers have been due a chance to get auctions in their own time-zone for a while. We're planning on some listings on Monday after our next fair, but all the goodies are either up on UKeBay or JB or in our shop at the mo till Monday.

I don't think eBay is the best venue but they get a heluva lot of walk-through traffic that is worth at least standing there in the hallway with a placard once in a while.

Wow, applause to you, Su, for bringing this discussion here! I really hope that others will join in listing in the SRA category, and that buyers will check out the offerings there on a regular basis - just think, no mass-produced crap to wade through!

Kalera:

I'm glad to hear that you are doing well. I may have to move a couple auctions over there just to see how they do. I get most of my views by potential customers viewing "sellers other auctions." So, if I put some in category X and some in Y, perhaps I'll get bids on both.

Off to search for Kalera's beads.

There is an SRA category in the UK too, we're now listing exclusively in the Glass - Beads and the Art-SRA categories on eBay.co.uk and not in lampwork at all and like you find we're doing better than before.

And of course, JustBeads is doing nicely for us too.

I am also thinking about it, but I didn't even know where to look on ebay to find it. I thought it was an SRA ebay group. I'm glad you posted the ink to that category. I wonder. maybe it doesn't matter what category you post in if your keywords on the search engine are what lets buyers find you? If that's true, maybe you do get as much traffic posting in the SRA as in lampwork. Cyndi

I listed one there but when I'm in a hurry (which is always) I don't want to go through all the extra questions they ask. Is there a way around that or a way to save preferences?

And now that I saw that category, I have a feeling it's going to be a baaaad thing. I'll make a little $$$ and then I'll give it right back to the cool things I find there. ::sigh:: Thanks a lot Kalera. :o)

Why not also start a lampwork artist guild/group the way a lot of mixed media artists do on eBay? You could all put the name/logo of the group in your auctions and mention that everybody in the group does all their own work, etc. etc. etc. and that it's a mark of quality and you support each other? I mean, it would be a bit different from the lampwork logos/groups that already exist.

(personally I don't do lampwork but I do list some of my polymer clay stuff in both SRA and other categories. I figure spreading them around a bit helps. But I don't know that people scroll through the clay category as much as they do through the lampwork category...)

And in a blaze of irony, we do better listing in the SRA and the ebay.co.uk beads-glass category than we did in the US lampwork. Ok, maybe the casual surfers might not find us but people who want better than the basic beads are using keyword searches and we do get views that way. In fact, our views are up, our sales are up, we're getting more shop sales.

Someone up there must be smiling at us.
