Mindat.org Directory - calling all SRA Beadmakers!

Hi all

Apologies if you have seen my post elsewhere tonight.

I have been on the phone with my brother, who owns the website Mindat.org . Mindat is probably the largest mineral/gemstone site there is. Some of you might know if it you are also rock hounds.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is this. He has a site directory there, including some bead and jewellery categories, and I have talked him into including a category for "Handmade beads - self representing artists" (this includes beads made from any material - just so long as you or your immediate family handmake them)

To link to your website or your ebay auctions there is free for basic listing. So please feel free to add your site or auction listing page. It can only help your traffic and google rankings as Mindat gets a heck of a lot of hits.

And please also do help us police it. If you see anyone listing in the SRA category who shouldnt be, let the site admin know so they can investigate it.

After all this talk and guilt tripping him into having a decent category on his site for people like his OWN SISTER, I now feel sort of morally obliged to spread the word and get the category populated.

You're very welcome Kandice, glad to see your entry - its always a pleasure to have an excuse to click through your lovely website!

I am not sure if it will bring any of us much business, but it certainly cannot hurt. My bro and his website have very good standing in the minerology world, so we might as well try to snuffle some of that there pie!

He has a photo from the last show he was at, and this bloke was holding a rock that he paid a million dollars for - no kidding.

For a rock.

Now if we can get those folks into beads...... bwah ha ha ha ha!

While speaking with the guy from the gem'n'bead show, I mentioned Mindat and there was an indrawn breath and a gasp of admiration.

Your brother's site is pretty hot stuff.

And thanks for getting us our own corner of it!

Hi Jill

Yup, its been a while hasn't it. I have been so slack in keeping up with everyone these days. But I do keep viewing your beautiful auctions, I still treasure my Europa pendant I won from you many moons ago!

Take care and hope you are keeping well,

Emma

Hi Su

Yeah, my brother is pretty famous with his site and stuff in the rock world. He has just come back from a jolly to Japan for a couple of weeks where someone flew him and his wife out there to talk about rocks.

Frankly I find rocks rather yawn-some. Mostly they are grey, hard and don't say a lot. But that is because every holiday as a kid we would be buggering about at cornish tin mines or welsh slate piles while he bashed rocks all day with a hammer.

Ah happy days!

Which, evil grins, is why I was quite happy to get a SRA section on the site, because I know what traffic Mindat gets. Its worth doing the free listing for the search engine ranking help alone I think.

Can he get us some Libyan tektite?

I want a big piece of glass made the organic way, with a big freaking meteorite.

Your brother sounds like he's done the right thing, made a living out of having fun.

He doesn't make his living from Mindat - he runs a computer company ( website design, etc

I think is the url)

The mindat is something he started off in his spare time and just kept working on. That is why it is kept free for users. I am sure it is starting to pick up a bit of advertising revenue for him finally, but to be honest if you knew the hours he puts into it, any such figures sort of become laughable really.

How his wife copes I don't know! lol!

As for the tektite - I am sure he has contacts.... ;-)

Incidently, my brother did try using some common flint in the torch flame. It got as far as a reassuring orange glow before he bottled it!

Ah, thought that was what you meant, but wasnt sure!

No, no photographs I am afraid. This was last summer they tried this bright idea ( brother 1 and brother 2) As I said, they didnt get much further than it glowing orange and then it just seemed to explode a little bit ;-)

Brother 2, who was doing the experiement, is a wuss like me, so when it all got a bit hairy he abandonned mission I think!

Can they be enticed to reenact the situation?

Aaahh..I remember her well. I know she has a good home 'over the pond'....although tis a bit tragic that my beads get the travel part and I have to stay here and make the things. :-/

Anyhoo....glad she brings a smile now and then....and that you're doing well.
