etching of semi-precious stones?

Has anyone ever tried etching fluorite or (dyed) coral? I'd be very interested in hearing about it. :)

I have two goddess figures - one is etched purple/greens and the other is a bright red etched goddess figure. They just beg for fluorite and coral to compliment them, but I don't think they look good with shiny gem stones. TIA

I don't think the etching cream would work very well. But they could be sand blasted or tumbled with grit.

You are right The etching cream is a salt of hydrofluoric acid. This attacks calcium, so if there isn't any calcium in the gems, the cream won't do anything.

And if there is it will damage the structure of it.

My chemist friend is freaking out and wants me to remind anyone who uses this stuff that it absorbs through your skin and attacks *your* calcium, too, so please please don't get any on you, and neutralize, neutralize, neutralize!

Thanks for the reminder. I use latex gloves for such things, but it never hurts to hear it again. Last thing I need to lose is more calcium - all my years on steroids gave me osteoporosis by the time I was 30.
