New Display

About 3 weeks ago, the day after the "Bead Party", Vicki and I went to Heritage House Cafe. When we went to pay our check, the woman at the register asked what was in my box (of course, Jewelry...we were going to go down to the other store after). I joked, and said that they should display my jewelry in their cafe (the register is on a jewelry showcase, which had a display of baskets for sale). She said "You need to speak to the owner", who just happened to be the owner of the Cafe!

Well, to make a short story long (LOL!), tomorrow afternoon, I am going to go put my jewelry into the cafe. I don't have a lot of display items. The case is a "full" case, maybe 4feet by 2feet footprint space, maybe 3 feet tall, with one partial shelf above.

I *think* my stove & countertop is about the same size. So I am going to lay it out today. I have made 3 of 4 display frames (I take picture frames, replace the backing with foam core board, and wrap a layer of quilt batting, then velvet (well, the stretchy stuff from a dress) around it, then glue the board back onto it, so it can stand up on it's own). I will make the other one in a few minutes.

I have one small and one medium bracelet (or small necklace) stands. Plus I took the above idea, made velvet-covered foam core board, and glued it to a dollar-store picture frame that has a bottom that bends, so I can either stand it up, or just "tilt" it, like a bracelet display.

I have a black sheet (brand new, should I wash it and dry it, just dry it, or take it out of the package). I was going to try to just kinda ruffle it into the bottom, wavy, with boxes on the bottom, so that I can get some varying heights.

I also found a CD rack that is just wire. I have a few of those sticky backings that I was thinking of putting on some of my earring cards, and clip them onto it. I made a earring carrousel, but I don't think that would work *in* it, where people couldn't turn it on their own.

I guess my question is...other than that, any suggestions? The owner and I haven't specifically spoken about payments, but I am assuming that we will go with the same 50% that Coleen and I have, unless I have to pay taxes. If I have to pay the sales tax, then it will be lower. So I need to try to find a consignment form, just in case she doesn't have one (Coleen and I have a verbal agreement that has worked for the year and 1/2 that I have displayed there).

I was going to put cards out. Should I make a small flyer (like a postcard-size card?) with more information? My card has my email and my website, and my phonenumber.

I was going to bring in some organza bags that they could be slipped into. Would that be overkill?

I think the previous person had a sign up (about 1/2 sheet size) with information. Since I don't write on the back what the items are (although I should get back into that habit), should I make a small sign that says something like "All items made with sterling silver, Swarovski Crystals, freshwater pearls, semi-precious stones, and other quality findings"? Or should I take the time tonight to write up the items on the back of each? Most would just say "sterling silver, Swarovski Crystal" ... or "Sterling and Bali Silver, Autumn Jasper, Black Onyx". 2 generations of cards before, I used to write on the back with metallic gel pens.

Am I just going too crazy over this? Yesterday, I was in Goodwill, trying to find little knickknacks that I could put in, to drape the items over...so I am a *TAD* worried, LOL!

Has anyone ever displayed in a setup like this? What experience did you have? I am not positive, but I feel that this is an "older" crowd, but it is downtown. Any suggestions of items I should put in? Should I go more earrings? Or more sets?

Should I include a mirror in the display, that the person at the register can pull out?

Okay, I am shutting up, and am going back to making this last one, then pulling out the jewelry, and figuring out what I will be doing...LOL!

Thanks to my rambling! Mary

Congratulations Mary! Although I don't have input for your questions, I am interested to hear from the rest of the group as well. I'm working on a similar arrangment and would also appreciate seeing what consignment form or agreement others have used. Your display ideas sound great!

Cool, Mary! I might have missed this in your post (been up too long) but I think consignment is usually at least 60/40 instead of 50/50. With you getting more than the shop/cafe owner.

Plus you take your jewelry off the market, and you still own the jewelry so any damage is your loss.

Congrats!

Good idea - the postcards

Also, an excellent idea.. make sure they get used for the intended purpose though, and don't *walk*..

I would be careful with the little knick-knacks.. might detract from the jewellery.. Also, from what I have seen, I like the simple elegant displays over the cluttered, eye-boggling ones.. Much more appealing to the eye and the jewellery should sell itself anyway, JMHO..

I would tend to display sets for older folks, but have the items individually priced so as to let the buyer decide. Then, after a month or so you would have an idea of how to set up the display better..

Oh you have such wonderful ideas 8-))

Hope my ramblings help..

I did 60/40. And it's kewl. I feel like it's "crowded", but yet, I also feel like it has room for more.

I spent 2 hours on my knees. The "kewl" thing was, when I was almost done (and the store had been closed), her and I were the only ones there, she had to go to the post office, and left me in the store alone. That was trust...silly, but it made me feel good.

Wish I had little knickknacks to put in there, to drape things over. I put

3 frames that I made (see previous post for description), and 2 other styles (essentially like a ramp). I used 2 gold gift boxes. I didn't put boxes and the like under the sheet, because it was hard to get into the display case itself (only the middle 1/3 was accessible, and there were the metal bars running down the middle, so you had to edge your shoulder in to get into it. Not *extremely* difficult, but made it hard to get to corners/etc.

Came home feeling good.

Now, I need more Valentine colors, and Easter colors. Most of the items that I have are more fall (i.e. moss agate, orange/red carnelian, jaspers, tigers eye).

She said her girls (the workers there) were excited about me putting my stuff in there, and she said I might have sales tomorrow. Not going to hold my breath (okay, maybe a teeny bit, LOL!)...but I can hope. The same as I said "okay, I will expect $1000 in sales tomorrow". LOL!

40 pair of earrings, 5 necklaces, and 16 bracelets (including 2 watches). Not as many necklaces as I wanted, but I don't make them that often. And I have to redo some bracelets...gotta learn that crimper better! but theoretically at priced value, I have $1,830 in there.

Whew!!! sometimes you never know what you have!

Good luck, and keep us posted, okay?

I don't even want to *think* about the value of my inventory...
