Pet ashes into beads

I know it's been said before in the past that people have had their lampworker friends put some of their pet's ashes into hot glass, then making a lampworked bead. I always thought that was a really cool idea because I saw one of the beads (I think it was one of Marilee's) and it was very beautiful - it just glowed.

Anyway, I happened to run across the website of Glitzy Glass Studio (she has really COOL glass toggles, too). They encase a small amount of your pet's ashes into a boro glass bead that has a bubble on the top of it. You choose the colors offered and get to pre-approve the boro bead prior to the ashes being encased into the bubble; then the finished bead comes to you with a 16-18 in. sterling snake chain. $40.00 total... AND for every purchase, a contribution is made to their local no-kill pet rescue.

I just think it's a way cool way to memoralize a beloved pet. :)

Back in Victorian times, folks used to take locks of the decease's hair and weave it into a fancy design and then have it encased in a locket or a pin. They also used to collect tears shed at the funeral in ornate bottles.

It sure beats having a taxidermist turn your old friend into.. whatever that is that it becomes. A bead is a lovely idea. Diana

OMG -- how wonderful. I'm definitely going to do that with Mercury someday.

Hi Diana! I want to thank you for visiting my site and for liking my pendants! I was doing an update on my website when folks started visiting - it showed me that they were coming from this address (the address of your post) so I clicked and I was so surprised! Please email me with your address and I will send you a custom toggle - give me about a week.

So far I have made over 50 pendants, hearts or vessels for people who have lost furry friends. I have one myself for my lovely doggie Jack. All our proceeds for the pendants go to CAPP and sometimes the funds go to a local vet who calls when folks have a pet they love but can't afford some sort of emergency treatment. I just can't resist a furry friend in trouble! I will also do pendants free of charge for folks who just can't afford the $$ to have a link to their passed on friend.

I love making the pendants - but I will admit that each one comes with a story that truly makes me cry! There is nothing as sad as a person who has just lost a major part of their lives. I have done two pendants for people who have lost a human family member. That was really hard. Anyway, I said all that to say - Thank you - now don't forget to contact me with your address so I can get a toggle out to you!

Happy Beading! Denise Glitzy Glass Studio

Thank you for your kind offer but it was Bluemaxx who shared your address with the group and if any thanks are given perhaps they could go to her? It is a lovely idea you have, memorializing a pet in this way. Please come visit our group again! Diana

Hi, Denise, of Glitsy Glass Studio! :) It was moi... bluemaxx (Linda) that found your lovely website the other night and posted in here about your Pet Memorial beads. And you're very welcome for the advertisement - you deserve it! The beads you make are _so_ lovely, and as far as I can tell, no one else does what you do.

I can also tell by your post that the memorial beads are something that you create with great respect for our deceased loved ones. I myself lost my 12 year old Siamese a few months back. :`( As soon as I can, I want to order a bead from you to memorialize my Lumpy Boy.

A gift of a clasp from you is a lovely thought... but I didn't do anything to deserve this gift! All I did was let other bereaved pet owners know they now have someone they can go to... who will respectfully create a tasteful, timeless memorial for them. So I'd like to thank you... for creating such beautiful memorials and also for your generous charities to those in need, whether they be people or animals.

God Bless You, Linda

I think it was Marilee's pet, and that Evalynne made the bead.

Has anyone heard anything about either of them?

Marilee is posting on occasion in rec.crafts.jewelry, and seems to be fine. I hope and pray that her health has improved substantially - it sucks to be disabled. (as so many of us know)
