PMC and Kiln question

I've watched the craft shows on HGTV and I've seen PMC fired two ways...with a torch and with a kiln. Is there much difference in the end product between the two?

Also, On Crafters Coast to Coast a woman was fusing glass to make watch bands. She referred to her kiln as her "baby kiln". It had a base/tray that she put the glass on and then she placed the upper part of the kiln down over/onto that base/tray. I tried searching the web but didn't come up with anything like that. I'd appreciate any info given. :)

this is the kiln she was probably using - it is a stackable, you can add extra rings for tall projects or just use the one stack for small fused items - it ramps up quickly and cools down nicely too. This was one of my first kilns and I still use it - not really used for annealing - but nice for small fusing and pmc projects. I do not know the difference in curing PMC in kiln vs torch. The difference is that with a kiln, you can get exactly the temp you need based on the type of PMC or ArtClay you are using. With a torch, you have to guesstimate based on the color of the item during the firing. If you want an option that's between the two (not quite a kiln, but better than a torch or hotpot), look at the Speed Cone firing system. It's a torch, but it has a pyrometer so you can get the exact temp you need.

for more info. If you are looking for a multi-use kiln, Jen-Ken makes a nice one that can be used for fusing, PMC, enameling and it has a bead door if you do lampwork. Best prices are on eBay, usually.

Denise and Barbara, thanks for the websites. Now I have a starting point on my wish list. :)
