PMC Questions

Kathy (KDK) brought with her some PMC pieces that she had made, and now I'm smitten! She made some GORGEOUS things, to say the least! I have to at least play with some now. I have some great ideas for incorporating PMC into some of my lampwork focal designs.

1) For those of you who have used both, which is better: PMC or Art Clay Silver? I realize there are several types of PMC, but I don't know what the difference is.

2) Can I fire this in my Don McKinney toolbox annealer without contaminating it (the kiln)?

3) What is a good price for the clay in its various forms, and what is the best source?

4) Would anyone here like to trade some for lampwork beads?

HA HA HA HA HA (turn about its fair play!)

I don't know what the difference between PMC and Art Clay Silver are.

Types of PMC - if you want to use it with glass the best one to use is PMC 3

Kiln- yes you can fire it in your glass kiln (I have 1 kiln on order for both PMC and LW)

is a good source. I think (but am not positive)that the retail prices will be the same or very similar regardless of thesource. I'm sure Rio Grande sells it also (they have a connection with thePMC group) We can talk trades!!!!

You're back! LOL! Your stuff was STUPENDOUS! I keep thinking about the ring you made. And that one particular pendant that I love so much. It's ALL YOUR FAULT! Now I can't stop thinking about trying it myself!

1) Art Clay came out first. Currently PMC has more improvements. But I have only used PMC

2) I'm not familiar with your kiln, but if it's programmable and gets hot enough (I'll check what temp in the morning, but over 1700), it will work. You can use the same kiln for PMC and glass, but not at the same time.

3) Standard retail price is PMC Plus (melts glass) 18 gr $27.00 PMC 3 (with glass) 16 gr 27.00 PMC Plus paste 18 gr 26.00 PMC 3 Paste 15 gr 26.00 PMC Plus syringe 9 gr 19.60 PMC 3 syringe 9 gr 19.60 PMC Plus sheet 5 gr 12.50 PMC 24K gold (?18 gr 302.50 based on $360/oz gold)

4) Trade for finished PMC or for clay? I will be stocking and selling PMC after BABE in Nov. I expect to give an RCB discount.

The first PMC I saw in person was at Nicole's. It was "painted leaves", which were too thin for jewelry but perfect for inclusion in her lampwork. It looks great in fused glass too.

We can talk more.

Will the process "contaminate" the kiln? I can recall reading something somewhere about not doing glass and some other things in the same kiln because of contamination.

I'm looking to trade for clay.

So you're going to become certified I'm guessing? Cool!

Last I heard - in my class- it was OK to do both - no contamination problems. And I asked more than once:)

Already am certified. Last May. I just don't want to invest in the stock just yet. Or get an order and then send for the stock.

I was told it was OK to use the same kiln for both materials, just not in the same batch.

Tink - It IS cool stuff isn't it? I've know peple who have fired both in their kiln (as Tina says, not at the same time) with no probs. The only question I would have for you is whether your Don McK toolbox kiln will reach the temp requried for some of the types of PMC. For our glass work we only need about 950 - 1000 F, but for PMC you need higher temps. One of the reasons I bought the kiln I did is that is is also designed for PMC and for small fusing projects. So that would be the only thing to check before you proceed I think.

Not high enough. The coolest firing temp, for PMC3, is 1290.

Tink:

My sister is the PMCer in our business, and she was told separate kiln. Yesterday i was at my LBS where some trademark beads are beads are being made, and Karen (the beadmaker) also said that the kilns were supposed to be separate.

When I specofically asked, at certification, whether fumes from silver or gold could effect subsequent glass fusing and annealing, I was told no. When I said I'd heard it could, I was told no again.

In our classes, we fired PMC, PMC with fused glass, made fused glass, and again fired just the PMC. No problem. Also no problem with the lampworker who used PMC to frame her lampwork.

Great. What did you have to pay for that?

Gold has a firing temp of 1860 listed. I don't know if that could be massaged or not.

Nicole did some too. I believe I was told in class that the PMC has to be fired first. Makes sense, since the binder in it burns away, and then (the gas) would be between the silver and the glass.

Decided I really need a cantilever door if I'm going to be doing sculptural stuff. I found a great price on it. It's typically over $1K, but kilndr.com quoted me as follows for my zip code in Ohio:

Kiln cost is $832.00 Shipping costs $ 110.00-115.00 (Motor Freight Collect)

That includes the digital controller.

AACKKK! You are joking, aren't you? You should have seen the display when I had a gold edged dish in the micro wave for about a fifth of a second.

Thanks for the info. It'll have to sit on my want list a little longer I'm afraid. (Of that quality at least).
